Need some Midnight help on a new Brug I got

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Hi all,

I need some help, emergency help if you will, on a brug I just got called 'Snowbank'.

It is a little tissue culture/cutting plug, then there are about 5 inches of bare nekked stem, then some leaves att he top. Is it like a tomato where you plant it up to the leaves, burying the stem? Or should the top of the cell be about the top of the soil line?

Or am I supposed to clip it off and it wil form that Y that everybody talks about?

Is 'Snowbank' worth getting excited about?

Thanks for any nightowls who can help me; I'd like to get it planted yet tonight. I know about the large pot, and a lot of water and fertilizer, I just am not real sure how to plant it.

If it has leaves, it should already be rooted..It is still small so needs to only be in a pot a little larger than the plug and protected from storng light until it gets a little bigger. Morning sun.. no direct afternoon sun and do not let it dry out but don't over water. Snowbank is beautiful.. I have two rooted cuttings I bought a couple months ago.. the were a little worse for wear from shipping but are growing nicely in 4" pots.. about to pot them up to a larger pot.

Maybe a picture would make what you are asking a little more clear.

Okay, thanks. I repotted it in a 5" pot -- what was handy -- and since you didn't understand what I meant by tomatoes, that tells me they don't root along them stem, so I left the stem above ground level, so to speak.

Thanks for the quick response!

Hi Suzy! Welcome to the brug forum!

Yes, you can indeed plant them deeper, but there is no real need if it's rooted well. I plant my seedlings a little deeper once in a while.. but only a few inches for strength when I have a fast growing one, or if I have to plant the pot at a tilt to straighten it out a little.. Either way, it probably wouldn't hurt it.

No, you cannot force a Y. Your plant will make a Y when it is mature and ready to flower. No need to pinch or cut back. Snowbank is a slow grower so don't worry if it doesn't get huge the first year like some others would. It is indeed a beautiful specimen, but mostly for the foliage.

I have mine in full shade. The leaves get burned in the brutal sun here. Mine doesn't like as much fertilizer as the other brugs either..

Snowbank is a beautiful plant! Congrats on your purchase!

Thanks, ZZ, Good to know about the shade! I wouldn't have guessed that.

You know how it is, I've been hearing about this fantastic (new to me) plant and all the crazy people growing them by the score and lugging them in and out for the winter and I want to see what all the fuss is about. ;)

One more question: I have a real pretty 10" blue glazed pot. Will Snowbank go into a 10" pot this summer, or should I put something else in my pot?

Thanks for the help,
Suzy

once it fills the pot it is in with roots, you could probably move it up to the 10" for this year. I had 3 brugs bloom last year in that size pots.. I am moving them into the ground this year.. when I find the time. They are ready and really do much better in the ground but you really don't have that option that far north unless you are prepared to lose the plant each winter and start over with cuttings. The brug will eventually fill any size pot you put it in. They have large prolific root systems. I was shocked last year when I put my first brug in the ground. It was in a 5 gallon pot and had only been in that pot about 2 months.. it was completely root bound! Pulled right out of the pot and no dirt fell away at all. Just move it up in size pot as it needs it. Overwintering is not difficult.. just let them go dormant and water sparingly.. they will come back in the spring.

Okay, thanks-- it looks like all I have to do is wait for the weather to get warm and I'll be set .

Thank you all for your most gracious help!
