Kim -- Make sure you use a good quality potting mix and not soil. I grow everything in containers of all types and the mix you use is most important. Miracle-Gro is good.

Dont plant the peony too deeply or it won't bloom.

This is great I use top soil on the bottom of a 20 gallon container and throw in perlite than I mix Miracle-gro with extra perlite and some Vermiculite and a shot of Orchid poting soil for the drainage, So I think that I have done pretty good with the soil,
I plant what its said like 6 inches deep so when the start to come up I will up date I may have to add more plants later to see what I have but I am trying to grow a black and white containers,
Thanks so much

gardenmart is right. That peony wants to be no more than 1" to 1.5" deep.

Kim -- I'm concerned with the fact of using "Top soil" as your base? In my opinion the top soil may not allow adequate drainage. Though some are of different opinion I place about 3 to 4 inches of river rock as a base in my containers and never, ever have any drainage problems or root rot which plagues container plants.
Clay pots have but one drainage hole so the rocks really work well. For my plastic and cedar pots I drill five or six half inch holes for additional drainage. This works for me as all my pictures will attest to this proceedure. My containers are at least 16" wide. The smaller ones have only about an inch of river rock for drainage.

What I did was put pea gravel on the bottom then perlite than mixed top soil with prelite than another layer of prelite on top mixted my soil hopefully that is a good drainages also mixwd vermicliteand orchid soil to give another layed yes I also have more than 4 hole that I drilled my pot are 20 gallons I have no idea how wide I could go out and find,
Thanks for all the good information this is helping alot
