Need tips on adopting a dog

Hi everyone.
This is my first time posting on the pets forum and I'm hoping y'all can guide me in the right direction.
My family is wanting to adopt a small to medium dog. We're not too picky about the breed as I grew up with lots of mutts around. I just want to avoid the so called bully breeds. I know they can be wonderful pets, but I'm just not comfortable around them because of their reputations. (Please, please don't yell at me...) :-)
My question is this: In your experience, do you HAVE to have a fence to adopt? All of the websites I've seen seem to require a fence. We have a large yard on a very quiet cul-de-sac.

Can anyone share their experience adopting from a shelter?
