CLOSED: Wanted: perennials for neighbor's memory garden

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

I hope this is the proper place to post this request. My neighbor Jeannie always tended her yard until she got sick a couple of years ago, then died last week. So, a few of us in the neighborhood thought it fitting to create a memory garden for her using plants with the names of Jean, Jeanne, and Remember.

We have ordered a white flowering dogwood named Jean's Appalachian Snow as the center focus and are looking for flowers and other small plants to group around it. The area for the garden has afternoon and evening shade. The soil is sand-clay mix, to be amended with leaf and manure compost, then mulched with shredded leaves.

We have not found any plants for purchase locally with a Jeane cultivar. I have posted the plants I have found in the PlantFiles on my Trade List, and sent out a few D-mails requesting the plants found on the Trade List of others with no responses. I don't have much of anything on my Trade List to trade with, other than plants that some may consider weeds.

Most of the nurseries are out of stock, or out of season, for these plants. Please let me know how to go about trading for these plants so as not to offend anyone, or break any DG policies. If anyone could tell me where to purchase or trade for these plants, I would be so very grateful!

Thanks for any help,
Sundownr

Also, I do understand that some of the bulbs may not be available for shipping until later in the year. We will reserve space in the garden for those plants we may get a promise of delivery for.

I found a package of Forget-Me-Nots seeds today and will start them in seed pots tonight for the garden.

Thanks again,
Sundownr

sundownr, i don't have it now but there is a beautiful iris named 'dear jean'. i am sure that someone would have that one. why not post the list of plants that you have collected so that it will help jog people's memories about what they might have out in their gardens. and this is a wonderful human thing to do. hugs to all of you. and if you don't get a lot of response here you might try posting this on gardenweb as well. daves beats the competition hands down but it never hurts to broaden the audience for something like this.

It would be easier to list them here than to link to my Trade list.

Dutch Crocus vernus:

'Remembrance' - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/31512/

Tall Bearded Iris:
'Jean Queen' - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/143459/
'Lady Jean' - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/117130/

Daylily Hemerocallis:
'I Remember You' - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/105301/

Hosta:
'Remember Me' - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/4334/

Mamajack, I originally had Dear Jean on the list, but the PlantFile says that it requires full sun, and our area is a bit shady. If you think it would do alright, we would love to have a few, they're beautiful!

Thanks for your input!

I don't suppose a plumeria would do you any good up there? I have a Jeannie Moragne.

sundownr, i had dear jean but lost it last year with too much rain.

dutch, that thing is a beauty.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Dutchlady1, no, that gorgeous plumeria of yours won't grow up here in zone 6, no matter how much I'd love to look out and see it blooming across the street! Thanks anyway.

mamajack, we all fell in love with the Dear Jean iris, but thought we couldn't grow it here because the whole neighborhood lives under the shade of huge old mighty pin oaks! We only have a few areas that get good sun all day. I had a pretty little purple iris growing along my west wall until the drought hit last year. Only 3 came up this season.

i dont have it but there is a pretty red rhodie called jean marie d' montague fairly common.

http://www.rhododendron.org/descriptionH_new.asp?ID=569

pick makes it look pink but its a nice deep red

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

shokami2, I agree that's one pretty rhododendron and it would be a perfect choice if we could keep the deer away from it. There's a deer munching path/crossing right through my yard and where the memory garden is planned... guess I should have stated the plants need to be deer-proof, too, sorry. I lose a least 1 rhodie every year. I'm down to only 2 and they are raggedy looking. Don't they eat the ones in the woods?

Thanks for your suggestion though!

Bev, Wish I had something you could use/add to Jeannie's garden. It would be fun, and an excuse for us to get together.

Coos Bay, OR(Zone 8a)

a very good deer deterent is plant a bunch of "smelly" stuff in the area where you want to keep the deer away. i have done this and was told to do this by several people with big gardens and it works great. i havent had a single deer munch on any of my stuff for 3 years (since we moved here) but alot of my neighbors things get eaten though.. mine dont! :) try rosemary and lots of lavendar and anything else that is "stinky" lol society garlic too.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

darius, I've been thinking the very same thing! It's a shame we live so close together (compared to other DG'rs) and not to have met. I'm going to D-mail you about a meeting proposal I think you may like.

shokami2, I'll look into planting something 'smelly' to a deer as you suggest... sure couldn't hurt! I would love to reclaim my rhodie bed. Thanks!

I have iris, daylily and canna.. they are guess whats, in that they were rescued from a lot where they are going to scrape it flat and plant sod. Please let me know if you would like the. As this is for a memorial just send me the info and I will send them right away. No trade needed. I feel there are times when we need to give back to those in need for what ever the project.

Nicotiana was named after Jean Nicot. I found this on Wikipedia:
Nicotiana refers to a genus of herbs and shrubs of the nightshade family (Solanaceae) indigenous to North and South America, Australia, south west Africa and the South Pacific. Various Nicotiana species, commonly referred to as tobacco plants, are cultivated and grown to produce tobacco. Of all Nicotiana species, Cultivated Tobacco (N. tabacum) is the most widely planted and is grown worldwide for production of tobacco leaf for cigarettes. The genus is named in honor of Jean Nicot, who in 1561 was the first to present tobacco to the French royal court.

Maybe this will help. love, julie

There is a chrysanthemum named Jean, as well as a camellia. Hemerocallis 'Designer Jeans'; Penstemon Jean Grace;

I don't have any of these, but I had to search to see what was out there named "Jean". I think I might have to put my name in the search engine, too.
It is really sweet of you to plant Jean's Garden!

This is what I found out:

There is a Dogwood tree called:
‘Jean's Appalachian Snow’

A rose called
Jean Ducher Rose

and another rose named in memory of Jean Harris.

A flower:
Lilieum Macklinae Sealy is the botanical name of Shirui Lily named after the maiden name of Jean Macklin (okay...this one is named after a Jean's last name). However, they say it only grows in India and cannot be transplanted. It is a pretty pink color. Who knows???

On a side note, there is a beautiful area in Arkansas named Petit Jean Mountain

Here is another one:
Flower : Rhodohypoxis Lily Jean (Pretty in Pink)

Or, here is an idea:
Jean Ingelow wrote a poem called; "The Daffodil, the daffodil!” (American Writer, 1829-1897)

A flower:
Cryptanthus Jean Nicol. (Its common name is Earth Star)

Another gov't park:
Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve is full of giant blue (and purple) Iris that grow 6 feet tall

Lavender plant - Jean Davis

Cymbidium Sarah Jean 'Ice Cascade'

Rhododendron 'Jean Marie de Montague'

Lewisia 'Norma Jean'

St-Jean strawberry

Hope your Jean's Garden is lovely!

Pughbear7, thanks, maybe we could call them Jeannie's rescued flowers and they'll have a name. I'll send you a D-mail.

froggies_girl and Aunt_A, really appreciate the info!! We will check out the plants you mentioned! Thanks for doing all that research, I know it takes a while to get that much info together!

All of the folks that have responded here and in D-mail have been so informative, terrific, and generous! I feel sure that Jeannie would have gotten a kick out of this! As I mentioned to another contributor, I plan on posting photos of the garden after it is finished. We are also compiling a booklet of all the plants placed in the garden with pictures of each one, the names, and care info, to give to Jeannie's family.

Thanks to you all!

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

I cannot say just how generous, considerate, and helpful the Dave's Garden community has been with Jeannie's memory garden project. There were as many private D-Mail contributions received as those openly posted on this thread.

We have received more than enough promises of plants, and other appropriate garden goods, to install a fitting memory garden for Jeannie. So, I'm closing this thread as I would feel guilty accepting anything more.

We thank all those who contributed their ideas, information, best wishes, plants and goods to make this a successful project. Pictures of the finished garden will be posted later as promised.

Thanks to you all.
Sincerely,
Bev and Jeannie's neighbors
