Possible book purchase?

I joined another book club....blast me I just can't resist. There'a book on butterflies I'm considering. Has anyone heard of or have "Flying Flowers" by Thomas Marent. Why I joined a club when I can't hold the book in my hands in flip thru the pages is a mystery to me. Bad P,bad!

Being a book fiend, I have heard of that one. Just don't remember where or why... It's not listed in the DG bookworm.

Bad P ... no! no! LOL

I'll reserve judgement for the moment but my pen is poised to check it...*G*

Which book club has books on butterflies?

Crafter's Choice. It's on sale half price right now.

Before I buy a book that I can't get my hands on otherwise, I check and see if I can get it through the library. Even if my local doesn't have it, sometimes another one does and I pay a modest transfer fee. That has helped me avoid buying a book that ended up being a disappointment a few times now. Sight unseen is tough, especially with nature & garden type books.

Did you look it up on Amazon? Or B&N? Sometimes the write ups & reviews can help.

The library has MADE me buy other books! LOL

I can only keep them out so long and when I go back for it again ~ someone else has it! GRRRRrrrr.

I live in a flyspeck town with a small library. I think the last copywrite date on anything gardening was the 80's. I took them two boxes of brand new books(gardening, crafting ,cooking and others)from book club purchases that turned out to be not what I wanted or same info in a different bookcover. The librarian rolled her eyes at me and signed.....but took them. I later discovered she had put them on the table they sell older books from and sold them for under $5.00 each.BRAND NEW BOOKS! Needless to say,I don't donate any more.

I don't think they'd do transfers.

I'm guessing the library is a thing of the past! Few folks read any more and most of those are getting grayer...

Our library has a bank of computers instead of books. I've quit going as I have more books that are far more interesting. I pick most of mine up 2nd hand.

I don't go either. I buy my books or research on-line

Flying Flowers got pretty good reviews on Amazon. I notice you can buy it used for $10. I've always had good luck with the 'used' book sellers on amazon, too.

Me too on the used!

The library system is only as good as the funding that it receives. In a smaller town, the resources are going to be limited. In Connecticut, the branches are linked together throughtout the states, so that you can get books for free from other branches. Of course, Connecticut is a fairly small and prosperous state.

In Northern Virginia, our county branches allow us to get books from other branches at no cost as well. Our population density and higher income work in our favor.

I think that I would be seriously annoyed to find that my new books were sold for such a small amount, but if the population there isn't going to borrow them, I could understand why the library would do that. Like everyone else, they have limited space to work with.

I have also purchased from Amazon used books with good results.

maggie,
thanks for the link.

tabasco,
I'll check out Amazon

penne,
you would have thought books w/ more recent copyright dates would have been apperciated. I'm afraid it's just the mentality of this small town.
