Howdy from Alabama

Piedmont, AL(Zone 7b)

Been visiting Dave's Garden for years, always used Garden Watch Dog and the plant data base is the best around I think....So I'm thinking one day I'm going to join and today is that day....:)

My wife and I live in a small town in Alabama and grow all kinds of perennials, annuals, roses, vines, shrubs, well just about anything we run across we like. Where do we plant all this? Every square inch of dirt we can find on our property and maybe some of the neighbors too...We grow roses and vines up the walls of our house, on trellises, up and down arbors, on top of our garden shed and even on some scary looking thing called an umbrella trellis that looks like a radar station.....:)

I guess what I'm trying to say is we try to make the best of what we got....

We got good neighbors here in our little Alabama town and we look forward to being good neighbors at Dave's Garden.... Sure look forward to meeting some of you folks....... I love to ask questions but I love to answer them too if I can.....I reckon I learn something new about gardening everyday and try to have fun doing it........So give us a holler when you can.

Welcome to Dave's Garden!!

What a beauty of a flower garden! Woa, love the Manarda andYarrow as companion plants, nice dark color coneflower, too!

How fun that you and your wife love gardening together! This is a fantastic place to gather info and friends as you go along.

Be sure and jump right in to help folks with questions in the Beginner flower, garden and house plant Threads, too-since you're an experienced gardner. A lot of newbie gardeners stop by often with questions, as well as folks like me who've gardened for years.

I hope you both enjoy our site!

Howdy again........

Sashagirl.......thanks for the nice welcome....enjoyed myself immensely already after only a few days.....Like you I like bee balm and yarrow.....good color combo and good flower head contrast, texture, heck I just like it.....:).....I've already bookmarked so to speak a good many forums and the new gardeners forums for sure....like Thomas Jefferson said, "I'm an old man but a young gardener" or something like that but whatever it was it made sense to me......:)

thanks Herbie.....Upstate NY?.....shoot we're practically neighbors.......:)

joey.....thanks and your so right, been chatting with those folks over in the mid-south forum and its been so much fun....

Howdy soapwort....You paste this into your browser and you can see some of the vines and roses....Hope you enjoy them...and as far as the umbrella trellis that looks like a radar station, well like I've said before, with that thing operational in the backyard if Tennessee decides to attack Alabama, I'll be the first to know......:)

by the way this year I'm trying two new vines for me, Black eyed Susan vine but in white and Hyacinth Bean vine.....both annuals from what I understand for where I live...will see how they grow for me.

Here's a URL: when it loads up, click on Web Gallery, there are other photos on there too from previous years.... http://web.mac.com/sinai/Site/Welcome.html

Gorgeous garden, Paul. I've been a lurker for a long time - while enjoying the benefits of the sites open information, too, and just subscribed a few days ago.

Nice to meet you,

Nice meeting you Theresa....Like you I been coming here for a few years, using the Garden Watch Dog and the great plant data base they have here, I reckon I used that more than anything till I joined....I wish I'd joined long time ago but glad I did now and going to enjoy it as much as can....These forums are just great really, continuing conversations that kinda ebb and flow overtime.....Sometimes you got lots of time for it and sometimes just time for a peak but the flow of friendship and community or whatever you want to call it just seems to kinda hover over and through it all....I'm glad to get the opportunity to participate in it now and like I said wish I had done it earlier.....Like I told someone earlier, I look to forward to jumping right into the middle of it.......:)

I just joined DG yesterday. I came across one of your postings in the first forum I was browsing, and subsequently picked on your web site. WOW! I love your stories - not only because of the humoristic content, but also because you have a great writing style. Your garden photos are beautiful and inspiring. I gather coneflowers and roses are some of your favorites. I have attempted a few roses (only minor success so far), but not coneflowers. Like you, I favor the old fashioned quartered kind. I have mostly woodland shade, so very limited areas for sun loving plants.

I am really looking forward to meeting fellow enthusiasts in this newly discovered virtual world! See ya online... terri

Piedmont, AL(Zone 7b)

Enough terri.....I'm going to send you the $50, you don't have to say anything else.....:)

Thanks so very much....so happy you liked the stories and thank you especially for the feedback....hearing from folks about what they thought or felt about the stories and meeting new folks is one of the nicest reasons for writing them in the first place....and if in writing them I get folks to smile, laugh, giggle, or chuckle with my stories, then that's another reason for writing them and a mighty good one too....

Hey ain't them old fashioned roses something?....I'm like you I love them things.....if you think you'd like to give coneflowers a try and if you got a small area of part sun...I know you'd like them, well lets put it this way, I'd sure hope you would.....:)

And Dave's?...boy you're gonna love it here....more good info than you can shake a stick at and the friendliest nicest folks I've run into I can tell ya....If they ain't giving you good advice they're either trying to give you some plants or inviting you to a plant swap....beats anything I ever seen.....and tickles me to no end.....So happy to meet you terri and give me a holler anytime, would love hearing from you.

Shirley....My wife said if you were to give her a holler on a day that I might be getting on her nerves she'll let you have me.and good riddance, I'm sure she didn't mean that.....Did she?......:)

And I got a brother....but he ain't no twin and you seem like a wonderful person and are certainly a good judge of character...So therefore I wouldn't introduce you to my brother for all the money in Donald Trumps change purse........:)

Nice to meet ya and my wife originally from east TN says howdy.......

welcome Paul lovely garden. I am new here but have lurked around as someone called it. I love the fact that you and wife share gardening, my husband does not get it. He doesn't want me to plant anything close to new house when we build soon. They get in way if repairs need to be done he says. I don't like the house we live in now much so I planted ivy to hide it and he got furious when it started growing and I loved it. It is going to be a rocky road convincing him to let me have flowers anywhere near house. I would love to read your stories where do I find them?

Piedmont, AL(Zone 7b)

scraps....Thanks so glad you like the pictures of the garden...Well sometimes folks are kinda slow getting where you want'em if you don't mind me saying and usually they get there sometimes on there on if its a nice place to be....and beautfiul flowers around your home is a beautiful place to be....So I wish you both luck and know you'll both get there if not together maybe one of you a bit later.....You know what I mean I know.....

And for my goofy stories that are a must read whether you are goofy or not.....maybe found right here:

http://web.mac.com/sinai/Site/Blog/Blog.html

and scraps there an icon at the bottom of the page says "archive", you just click on that and you'll find some more stories, I sure hope you like them and welcome to Daves by the way, if you need any help with something here just give me or anybody here for that matter a holler, more help here from good folks than a person could use in a lifetime, and that ain't no joke....You have a good holiday, see ya

Lena, MS(Zone 7b)

well your wife is one lucky lady. you grow lovely flowers and you are very funny. I went to link and read some stories and I agree with the others. You have some funny stories. I put it in my favorites so that when I am bored I can go back and read more. I loved the squirrel story so much. How on earth do you talk your way out of a floor full of pecans and peanut butter..... gotta run well hobble along.TTYL.

San Francisco Bay Ar, CA(Zone 9b)

That’s first time anyone’s ever told me I’m always doing the right thing! I think I like it, so I better get back to reading ;-).

Piedmont, AL(Zone 7b)

scraps, I keep telling my wife that very thing, she is lucky.....:) But seriously, its me that's lucky....You read that story about "Should I plant annuals or perennials Doc?" and you'll see just how lucky I am to have her and to just be here at all.....and you ask me how did I talk my way out of a floor full of pecans and peanut butter?....I talked as fast as I could, that's how....:)

Sunnyg, I can't count high enough to count how many times we both have been right.....But don't be getting the big head, I can only count to 42.......:)
