Hummingbirds Are Back!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Saw the arrival of the first hummingbird this season on April 26th in Jacksonville, FL. They are a little early this year, so I guess that means we will have them longer. Flowers are just starting to bloom, so I am glad we have the Jasmine to keep them happy until the rest of the garden wakes up completely.

I just saw the first one here this year the other day. Then last night my DH said he came through the yard again. It stops and hovers over my Milkweed then swoops down and flies off. I guess I need to put my feeder back up being my yard is on his way to wherever he is going lol

I tried a feeder last year, but they only wanted the flowers. We planted a lot of hummingbird and butterfly friendly flowers last year and they are just starting to bud this year. The only ones who made use of the feeder was wasps, so I don't think I will put it out again. Not that the wasps don't need a little refreshment too, but the feeder is in the middle of the cutting area and I don't like getting stung. Oh well.

Up here on the West Side of Cleveland, the first bunch of male hummers I've seen this year returned on Saturday to scout out nesting sites. I didn't get to see them up close yet, but I saw a glint of green, so odds are they're Ruby-throated Hummingbirds.

I had my first one today and it was a Ruby-throated, I heard their wings lol Looked around and there he was! I just put my feeders out last night :) I sure missed those babies they are so entertaining when I'm outside working in the flowers!

This is great! Keep the sightings coming. They seem to migrate very quickly.

Male ruby-throated hummers were first sighted here about May 4 -- we've had a steady stream of "takers" at the feeders ever since.
