Tithonia sunflower Goldfinger can I transplant?

Sugar Land, TX

My plants are about 18 inches high, and I planted them too close to a lantana that is taking over the bed already. These plants are beautiful, and I don't want to destroy them!

Please respond. I keep cutting away at at the lantana, but I really think I need to move two or three of my sunflower plants.

Thanks! I grew these from seed, so I'm very proud of them. LOL

I've grown that cultivar and I'm going to say yes. I didn't have to transplant mine, but I think it would be ok. At the end of the season when they'd had it, I went to pull them up and they have very small root systems for the size of the plant. They were really easy to pull; I thought I'd have to fight them a little. I'd say just make sure you water them a lot after you move them until they get settled in. And lantana will take over your life if you let it; don't be afraid to just prune the heck out of it. We had one we kept mowing down and it was scary how quick it would grow back. I finally dug it up - lantana is invasive in these parts.

Yes, you can transplant them. Try to get a bunch of soil with them, so they don't wilt too much. They usually will wilt anyway, , but if you keep them watered good for about a week, they will come out of it. Also, remove any spent blooms, also. : )
