My daffys and tulips are blooming. I am (hoping) to move this season and want to take most/all with; so that they don't "bite the dust when everything goes to hardscape" (that what is happening more now in this area)
. Anyway, the daffys are close to the surface. I have dug and potted some clumps-they are only 6" deep and the Acetea (sp) Pheasant Eye are more like 4" deep. We had 100 inches of snow and I am assuming they wanted out of here like I did.
Suggestions please. If I dig, pot and cut blooms, will I do a major growth setback? They are interplanted with daylilies and at this point, I can see where those fans are-pop them out-dig the bulbs and replant the daylilies. Or. Should I tag and wait as long as possible ( not certain just when the move will happen..just that it will and this season the yard will be full of pots! If that happens, how should I deal with the bulbs at a time when the foliage has died back naturally.?
daffodils and tulips-digging now
After the foliage dies back naturally you can dig and store (like in open mesh bags) for fall planting. Thusly, when dug up they've already got their storehouse of energy for next year.
Thanks, I will probably pop the daylilies into pots and leave the daffys ripen.
My gracefulness has already cost me a few plants. ARGH
Sorry ... I'm a baby gardener ... actually grew up in Hawai'i and now living in New England so have a LOT to learn ... let me get this straight, I can actually dig up my tulips once they are pau (Hawaiian for done) --i.e., once the leaves have turned brown--put the bulbs in a mesh bag and I assume store in my basement for planting next Fall? And so then I can put something else in their place for the summer?
aloha! Marcia above is moving hence the effort. I would buy new tulip bulbs for when i got to the new space, but we gardeners sometimes do crazy things. leave your tulips where they are. mark the spots now and you can plant perennials and what not around the clumps and put some bulb food on them while the leaves are still green. But I wouldn't dig them up willy nilly to make room for something else. Too much effort involved to have to put them back in the fall. Annuals will grow nicely on the spots on top of the tulips and die off in the winter and the tulips will come right back up next spring. Or you could pot up some tulip bulbs this fall in big pots and keep them in a cold but protected spot and bring them out in the spring and put them where you want them and then move the pots out when they are done.
Have some fun with it!
