New Braunfels

Wichita Falls, TX(Zone 7a)

Hi! My family is planning a trip in mid-August to New Braunfels. We would like to rent a house on the Guadalupe River. We aren't finding too many options on the internet. Does anyone know of any places for rent?

Thanks!

Earthtiller, I'm surprised nobody answered yet. DH grew up there, but we live in Fredericksburg now, so we are not really up-to-date on such things. I do know there have been some really bad floods in NB that washed away many houses and condos near the river. I'm not sure how many have been rebuilt. Have you checked with the Chamber of Commerce yet? They should keep a pretty good list of places for rent. The last time we were in NB we went to Schlitterbahn and there were tons of condos there atleast, but not necessarily right on the river. Is that what you meant?

In the New Braunsfels vicinity, there aren't a lot of houses available for rent. Much of the available land is taken up by tent camping operations and small cabins (crammed together) I think the land owners just figured out it was more profitable to mark off 500 square feet of dirt and charge $40 a night, than to build houses to rent. It's a party river too, so the party animals can't burn down a tent site. :)

The few houses that owners rent out for the summer also seem to fill up up to a year in advance. With a narrow window of mid August, it may be a little rough to get a place this late in the game. You may have better luck in town around the Comal.

Thanks for your responses! We just sent the confirmation today on a nice house on the Guadalupe River in Gruene. We have been to Gruene before and just love it! I am hoping to get to San Marcos for a little shopping; I've never been there.

Glad to hear you found a place. You guys will have a blast. My family, myself and some friends will also be floating a river around the same time, but just a different one. :) We are renting two larger cabins on the Frio River in Concan, the first week of August.

That sounds fun! I will have to look into the Frio River, I have never heard of it! Maybe you can give us a review when you get back.

I can give you a review now. :) It will actually be our 3rd time there, 2nd time with kids. I've done the Guadalupe in New Braunfels twice, and while it's fun, we do like the Frio a little better for our family vacations. It's an extra hour and half drive though.

It's a little less crowded than New Braunfels and much less of a party atmosphere. When the kids are with us, it gets a little frustrating when there are all those college age kids drinking, acting stupid and cussing and such. They may only be a less than a quarter of the people out there floating in the Guadalupe, but they have a way of making themselves noticed.

The shopping is not like New Braunfels and San Marcos, but Uvalde is a neat old turn of the century town about 30 miles away. Plus the hills are bigger and you have two great state parks near by - Garner SP (which hosts an outdoor dance in the pavilion every night in the summer - kids love this) and Lost Maples SP. Plus a big bat cave and two additional rivers close by - the Sabinal and the Nueches. I like to hike and explore nature too so I enjoy the surroundings much more.

Oh gosh, sweezel. Such wonderful memories you have brought to us. Our "children" are now 42 and 45. When they were 9 and 12 we had the time of our lives on the Rio Frio.
Stayed at Lady Bird Park in Fredericksburg and drove to Concan for the day. Our neighbors and friends with their children were with us. We each had small travel trailers.
One of the absolute highlights of our lives. We can shop anywhere. That kind of enjoyment is so precious.

Might be time to check out a weeks stay at Concan again.

A word about shopping in San Marcos. I don't think you'll be able to do even half of the outlet mall in a day. I assume you're talking about going to the outlet mall. We went several years ago and couldn't get to all of it and then went back last year and discovered it had doubled in size. You can get some really good deals, depending on what you want, but it's very spread out. You'll be walking a lot. It was a lot of fun though.
