Where do you Houstonians buy bulk mulch? The only time we've gotten a truckload, we bought it from a place nearby because we saw their sign. The price and service were fine, but I don't remember having nutgrass before and we have bunches of it now! Caveat: That may not be their fault... I was a very beginner gardener back then and was totally overwhelmed by my yard. I weeded everything and then covered it up in compost and mulch. Soon afterwards nutgrass started popping through the mulch. It is highly possible that it had been there already and I just didn't notice it in the midst of all of the other weeds.
Anyway, we're thinking about getting another big load from somewhere instead of hauling bags of mulch home ourselves. We own 2 small cars, and their shock absorbers were protesting pretty vigorously last year after multiple trips with mulch and compost as we re-did a lot of the backyard.
Any suggestions?
Houston Mulch Suppliers?
Marylyn,
I don't know where you live in the Houston area but out in Humble we get our mulch, dirt, rock and various gravels from a place called Dirt Cheap on FM1960. I believe they deliver but am not sure.
We're in the Spring Branch area, on the northwest side of the city. I'll look up Dirt Cheap (cute name!). Thanks!! :-)
I don't know the area really well as we just moved here in late 05 but I am learning....I love it here though...all the stuff blooming year round and learning what to plant where and when to plant it....
Marylyn, 'we' use Elliott's for Pine Bark Mulch Aged & Regrind PBMA. We get 65 yds per load.
But some local L/Ser friends of mine use Cowboys.
Hope this helps. If you need some more info, LMK.
:~)
Do you have full names/websites for either of those places, Prince? And thank you! :-)
Elliott's 800-323-4417
Cowboy's 713-932-9825
:~)
Naturesway is pricey, but their stuff is really good. You would have to check on their delivery prices, I live down the road from them and pick it up myself. They are really nice and like i said they have great products, but they are pricey

I think thats their address...
Marilyn...I just got some garden dirt delivered this Spring from:
Fm 529 Top Soil
Address: 15527 Fm 529 Rd, Houston, TX 77095
Phone: (281) 463-4982
They were great to deal with and the dirt was good quality. We got some from another place last year and it was full of hard clogs and weeds, etc.
Hope this helps.
Sheila
Excellent.. Thank you, everyone! I'll start calling around tomorrow. :-)
Marylyn, would you please keep posting on what you got and approx. prices delivered? There are many of us who need this help and just don't exactly know where to turn. It gets so frustrating. Thanks!!
Ann
I second FM 529 topsoil--I started with a mountain (30 yards) of what they call their custom soil blend 18 years ago in my drive way, it was the basis of my beds. I've also ordered mulch from them in the past. but not the last couple of years.
Debbie
=)
Debbie...I got three yards of soil and thought I would never get it all spread, I can't even imagine 30 !! LOL!!
All...I know with FM 529, if you purchased 3 yards of soil, you got free delivery in my area. Otherwise, there was a delivery charge. Don't know how it works for different areas of town, but just something to keep in mind.
I had a lot of help with that soil but it was pretty funny the pile was taller than the garage on my one story house....I had no sod, a bare slate to work with, and nice cool early April temps., I was 18 years younger, I thought I'd never see my new driveway again. One of the joys of having your house built, you can start the way you want.
I better get 3 yards of mulch from them if they have free delivery now, they are very close to me so I know I must be in that free delivery zone. I was afraid to inquire on prices this year with the price of oil being what it is I figured everyone had jacked up delivery charges...
Don't quote me on this because I don't remember exactly, but for 3 yards (I think it was 3 yards, but now that sounds like more than I remember paying, so maybe it was 4) of garden soil it was about $97. Don't know what it was before. I do know that they will do a load with both soil and mulch if anyone needs that to make the minimum to get the free delivery.
debbie, You must be pretty close to me because they aren't very far from me. I'm off Barker Cypress and basically West.
close to barker and w little york--adjacent to windsong
they've absorbed the delivery price in the cost this year--they were 24.95 a yard last year for their premium best mulch (including delivery--3 yds)
That price also includes the tax, so that is probably a little bit of it. The one we used last year had a minimum order for free delivery too and their dirt wasn't good. Also don't know if it matters or not, but I got soil, not mulch, so that might be part of it.
I was still pleased with them and would definitely use them again if I need a load. I may do that next year with mulch. This year I bought it from the boy scouts because the troop I bought it from delivered it to my back patio and it was bagged, so I can put it out a little at a time. Helps them with their fundraising, helps me because I don't have to lug all those bags around or get it all put in in a weekend. Not the best mulch I ever had, but it also didn't cost what the "best" I have used costs, so I guess that is the trade off.
Ok, here are my results:
Elliot's doesn't deliver to residences down here. They're way up north somewhere. :-)
Dirt Cheap charges $20/yard for hardwood native mulch. They have a $25 delivery fee, plus $2/mile if you are out of their local area (which I am)
FM 529 Topsoil - $32/yard for hardwood mulch. $32.50 for the out-of-the-area delivery. The guy on the phone was VERY friendly. :-)
Cowboy's Topsoil - $25/yard for hardwood mulch. $20 for delivery. Free delivery if the order is $190 or more. As it turns out, they're only about 1.5 miles from my house so we'll probably go with them. ^_^
Thanks, everyone!!
P.S. Debbie, are you coming daylily shopping with us next week?
Thanks for the postings Marylyn and all. I'm saving all that info. Got to get a yard "person" to do my work for me.
Ann
