OK, confession time. Stuff came up last fall, and I didn't get my 2 cent snow crocus bulbs planted in the front lawn as planned. They spent the winter in the crisper drawer of the garage fridge. Although I did manage to get a few handfuls of leftover daffs planted this spring, the crocus bulbs are still languishing. They look fine -- not getting dried out or lightweight, and no, I don't have any fruits or vegs in that fridge.
We're getting near the end of daffodil season (azaleas are blooming), so crocus season is past. Is it better to plant them out anyway (could even trench them in a border and retrieve them for replanting in fall), or should I leave them in the refrigerator to take their chances?
Help!
1000 snow crocus in crisper drawer ??
I would wait-put a HUGE note on the fridge, one on the calndar and any other place you will se it and plant them in the fall...they should be fine-or you can plant them now and you should do fine-IF YOU PLANT THEM NOW-it would be like forcing blooms-they had their cold period in your fridge, so they should bloom if you put them in the ground-but you have to do it THIS WEEK-ASAP-otherwise it will be too warm for them-or you can send them to me and I will make a happy home for them!!LOL;)
With forecasts for 70's in the day and down to just the 50's at night, I'm not sure it isn't already too warm for them... I was wondering if anybody else had (successfully) put them in the ground this late or stored them for a year...
You've got a good point about putting huge notes to self on the calendar and on the fridge!
Mine just started blooming when it got warm-if you were worried you could alwys do them in a pot instead-easier to put up if you need to...
true, but... 1000 potted crocuses... I was not making up that number, LOL. (Hey, they were on sale for just 2 cents a bulb... how could I not spend $20 on them?)
Oh-I agree-that is a heck of a deal!!
critter, I think you'd be best off to go ahead and get them in the ground. Last spring I found a bag of grape hyacinths that my friend, Jan, who had lived here before me, and passed in November of '06 had bought earlier that fall. They hadn't even been in the fridg, but most of the bulbs seemed fine and I went ahead and planted them. They went ahead and developed lots of leaves, which stayed on way into summer, and bloomed right on schedule this spring. I imagine since those crocus have been cooled, they'll go ahead and bloom; probably won't last long, and may be a bit stunted, but should go ahead and leaf out and be fine next spring.
Neal, I defer to your experience! How late did you plant those, do you remember?
If grape hyacinths did OK with a late planting, crocus bulbs should survive also as you said. It doesn't matter to me if they bloom or not -- I'd just like them to live! I'm thinking they'd be better off in a trench along the edge of a bed at this point, since they'd get mowed in the lawn. I can lift them in fall and plant them out into the lawn as originally planned. Thanks!!
I'm thinking it was sometime in April that I planted those. Seems like it was either just before or just after we moved in. I think as long as they can grow some foliage they'll be in good shape for next spring.
