I like to raise my outdoor plants up off my deck; it protects the wood and helps with drainage. About 5 years ago I found these little stands for $1 each at Big Lots but I have never seen them again. The ones I have are about 6" in diamer and just 1" high. I have lots of "pot feet" for the same purpose but I like these better. They have held up well but I need a dozen or so more and I can't find them anywhere.
If you have seen these or something close to them I would love to hear about it.
Has anyone seen these?
I've got some, but they're bigger than 6 inches in diameter -- maybe 8 or 10"? I paid more than $1 for them, too, but I don't remember thinking they were unreasonably priced (I got several). I think I got them at WalMart.
It helps even more with drainage if you add a wick of some sort of the pot and let it dangle. Tapla taught me that on his thread about water tables and drainage in containers! :-)
Yes, Wal Mart has them. I want to say they are about $2.97.
I think the Dollar Store has them too.
Thanks, I'll check WM today.
Fortunately I do not need any wicks for drainage in this part of the country. As long as the drain holes are not plugged I have more trouble keeping things moist enough. LOL
We just remodeled and put a new deck on the house. As soon as I come up for air I'll install another drip system for the pots which gives me just the right amount of water on a regular basis.
If you're not already using polymer moisture crystals in your pots, be sure to check out my upcoming article on them (scheduled for next Thursday). They're the biggest help for containers on my sunny deck!
I do use them in the summer for some things like hanging baskets. Because of our mild climate I am able to leave most of my plants out all winter. Many tropicals like hibiscus will go dormant and not take up a lot of water in the colder months; too much moisture then will cause some roots to rot.
Loking forward to reading your article, I am always interested in new uses for the crystals.
Critter, where is the article you are talking about? Should have been published on the 8th? Where?
Ardesia, yes I purchased a half dozen of these and one other type at Wal Mart. Very reasonably priced.
Now, I am looking for deck railing holders, expandables to go under windowbox type planters. I have seen them, but I need quite a few and the ones I have seen are quite expensive. Does anyone know where to look?
Maybe I need to post a new thread on here. Will do that. thanks.
Jeanette
It was published on the 8th. Here's a link: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1092/
If you miss an article on the publishing date, you'll find links in that week's DG email newsletter. A list of all articles (with thumbnail photos & intro paragraphs) in order of publication can be found under the "Guides & Information" tab. You can find a list of all articles I've published by clicking on "critterologist" to go to my home page, or by clicking the "for more articles by critter" link at the bottom of any of my articles, which takes you to a nifty page that has thumbnail photos and intro paragraphs for all the articles: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/by.php?user=critterologist
Sorry, no clue about a good source for the railing planter supports!
