This egg was so big...

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

My husband said HIS butt hurt. LOL

The tile behind the egg is 4"x4". That egg was about the size of a lemon. I could not even close my hand around it.

I opened it expecting more than 2 yolks but it was two full sized eggs in one shell.

It was a monster!

Wowsa Michelle! What are you feeding those gals?

MollyD

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Lately, they've been tearing up my gardens, mooching worms while I level for a pool, flopping in DE, stealing a few eggs, etc. They dined on hosta today. grrrrr They also have crushed granite, crushed shells, table scraps and all the bugs and worms they can find.

They'll be getting fenced in very very soon!

Thought I'd add the pic of one of our tiniest eggs too. ;)

That's quite a diet they've got there! Hope those weren't your most expensive hostas they dined on!!
Mine will have to be fenced in since our malamute would love a chicken snack several times a day. He wouldn't chase them. He'd just lie down where they would walk across him and then SNAP and down they would go. Yum! So if I want to keep them I've got to protect them from him and all the other predators around us.
Just got 4 Cayuga ducks added to my order ^_^ !!!

MollyD

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Four of the hosta are club plants! Hope none of the members are reading this. LOL I've got two more years to bush them back out. Ahem.

The guy down the road brought down some eggs for my silkies to set. He's taking down a large section of fencing and said we can have it. Whew! He was kind of laughing at them eating my hosta.

We have a herding mutt and a chocolate lab and they don't hurt the birds. The herding mutt actually rounds them up for me and chases them to their pen. I was told she is part Australian Shepherd and part Sheltie. She's an odd looking dog. We didn't want her but the kids begged... This is Dixie.

I want to get some ducks but not until after I have a larger pond dug.

Wow! Great egg!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I knew I had a better picture somewhere. Isn't she an odd looking dog??

I see a lot of the Australian Shepard in her but I sure can't see the Sheltie! They're small dogs with silky looking fur. You'll never have trouble picking her out of the crowd ^_^

Is That a Turkey Egg ? Paul

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

http://www.australianshepherds.org/rio.html This is a Blue Merle Australian Shepard. I think your dog Michelle has some of this coloring. There is something else in there too but I can't figure out what!

MollyD

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Here I am.. being goofy all day long.. didn't enlarge your photo and thought the egg on the can was there for comparasion... and dahhh.. I thought the cantalope was the egg you were talking about...

So glad I clicked and saw the light!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

ROFL!!!!!!!!!! Can you picture that chicken's butt if it laid one the size of that melon!!! Pass the Preparation H please!!!!!!!! LOL

MollyD

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Someone would need stitches if they laid the melon!

No turkeys here Paul. ;)

My neighbor breeds dogs but occasionally helps people place dogs too. Dixie was from an accidental breeding and he was helping to find them homes. She straggled over to our place one day and never went back.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

She looks like Aussie and BC mix. Those eyes are striking.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Hello Cajun! Her eyes are a deep gold color and they kind of freak people out. ;) She's a very good dog other than racing/chasing cars. She has a lot of energy. She's been trying to bring eggs in for us but the Lab knocks them out of her mouth so she can eat them.

This is Liberty (Libby), the Alpha dog.

We had a wiemerainer (sp?) with those amber eyes. They are unsettling at times.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Wiemaraner are beautiful dogs! One of our old neighbors had one.

We've had people ask if the dog is part wolf. LOL

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

The one we had was a large male of german lines. He was champagne colored and had long hair. It made a plume off the end of his docked tail. He was beautiful. We called him Kong.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Do you have any pictures of him?

My husband would really love to have Siberian Huskies again. They were beautiful loving dogs, great with the kids. The only draw back I saw was them wanting to run off or dig out. Well, they also had a ton of hair. LOL

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I have some pics but I need to scan them and my scanner is on the fritz.

My BC is a shedding machine. I have never seen a dog shed so much. He will make 9 this year and he has never blown his coat. Just sheds everyday of his life. I tried keeping him inside but it was a nightmare. He stays out now and he loves it.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL I could not figure out what BC was earlier. My 13 year old guess Border Collie? My mother used to have one. She did not shed so bad.

Huskies have that double layer of hair so part of the year it was the cotton down underneath in huge chunks and the other part of the year it was the coarse outer coat. And that hair shows up on everything!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

BCs are also a double coated breed. Problem is, my boy never blows the undercoat after winter. Just sheds it all year long. Other than that, he is a perfect dog.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, I bet that is fun. Hair, hair everywhere! LOL Good thing he is happy outside.

Neither our mutt nor the Chocolate Lab shed enough to cause concern. The Lab does have a huge tongue though and is happy to shower you with it! She's a big goofy ox!

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

You forgot to tell them Dixie is also a poodle herder ;) She's a true herding dog.

Lana

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Lana. I think your poodles might tell the story a little differently!

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

Oh yeah, I'm sure they would! ROFL

Michele I just found a picture of an Anatolian Shepard. Looks a lot like your dog.

MollyD

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

That does look a lot like Dixie. That one looks like it has a lot of gray. Dixie has a lot of caramel coloring. I'll probably never know exactly what she is. LOL

Lodi, United States

How big is Dixie? Anatonlians are a giant breed. I know because my baby Asgard (33" at the shoulder and 120 lbs) is an Akbash--which some people consider a variety of Anatolian. They don't herd--but they are wonderful guards.

I think Dixie looks like a Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog or Kelpie cross. Its nice when you don't know--they can be something different everyday!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh, she's nowhere near that size! She's smaller than our Chocolate Lab that weighs about 50 pounds. She's probably only 2' at the shoulder and about 35-40 pounds.

LOL @ the last remark. I think maybe Sheltie (translate "looks like Lassie") was used instead of Shetland Sheepdog. Many of those do have odd coloring. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Bi-blue.jpg http://www.canamishelties.com/images/tillybdy3.jpg She definitely does not have the thick fluffy long hair. It's more coarse and short. Maybe she just didn't get her under fluffy coat. :) Geesh, looking for pics lead me to looking at Blue Merle Australian Shepherds...I may never be back!

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

LOL, how funny! The pic of the Anatolian above is my dog Hawk meeting what was then our Boer buck, Buckley for the first time :~D Here's Hawk along side one of my foster dogs who is about Dixie's size. I work with ASD rescue and Dixie is definately not ASD. I think she's herding dog all the way whereas the ASD are guardians.

This pic was taken last summer and Hawk had lost a bunch of weight because of the heat and drought. He looks much better this year. Till it gets really hot anyway :(
Chele, you'll have to show this pic to Maddie. She'll probably want you to print it so she can carry Brian around again ;)

Thumbnail by Wvdaisy
Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Wvdaisy you don't think the other breeds in Daisy could have tempered her size and instincts? After all if she's got Sheltie or anything like that they are herding dogs and they're way smaller than the Anatolian. Coloring and coat look sorta right.

MollyD

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I just showed Maddie the picture and asked if she knew who that is. She got a big smile on her face and kept giggling. Of course two of the other kids were yelling "I know, I know!".

Lana and Brian stayed with us last year for the Ohio RU. My girls absolutely loved them but Brian spent more time wrestling with them, playing games and doing piggy back rides. I think Lana is still jealous. LOL

After looking at the "tri-color" shelties and "blue Merle", then looking at the Australian Shepherds, her coloring makes a lot of sense. She does have a white stripe down her chest and white feet. She has a very narrow pointy nose that she loves to use for poking (me, the kids, the birds).

Look at the eyes on the Australian Shepherd mix! http://www.fuzzle.info/images/HWC_June06_2/HWC_07.jpg

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

Molly, sometimes we do get ASD mixes that are smaller. I'm only entirely certain about Dixie because I've met her in person. ID'ing ASD mixes is one of the hardest things in rescue. We go by feet, tail, ears, head shape. None of Dixie's match. Even her colouring is off if you've ever seen a fawn brindle ASD.

Three of Chele's girls were packed and ready to go home with us by Sunday. We had to talk them out of the back seat LOL. Maddie, the youngest, packed her folding chair and was ready. I think she carried a pic of Brian around for weeks. We would have taken them for a visit but no way was Mom ready for that!

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Thanks Wvdaisy for explaining ^_^ I'll take your word for it since it's a breed I'm unfamiliar with.

MollyD

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I have learned something new. I thought Anatolians only came in buff with black points. they are nice looking dogs.

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

ASD's also come in grey/black brindle like my hawk, fawn/brown or black brindle, pinto, and white, which they call Akbash. www.nasrn.com

This is Hawks full sister, Adyrr(a-deer) with a red baby Boer. She now works on a sheep farm in VA.

This is my Akbash, Asgard--they are suppose to be a little rangier than the standard Anatolian. I got him through animal control as a "small 11 month old Anatolian". I was looking for a large Anatolian. Asgard was 27 inches at the shoulder when I got him--3 months later he was 33 inches and obviously neither 11 months when I got him nor a regular Anatolian--but very much the same personality. Here he is guarding the brooder.

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

I had a female fawn ASD foster dog here who stood 31" at the shoulder. I've seen some much bigger, too.

Oakland, OR(Zone 8a)

After taking a long look at Dixie's picture, I think she is a Australian Cattle Dog-Border Collie or Australian Shepherd cross. The Australian Cattle Dog are short haired, and carry the merling gene as does the Aussie, which have a slightly longer coat. Don't know about the Border Collie, but I suspect they do, also. However, I think that the coloring comes from the Aussie, which not only has blue merle, but also red merle coloring, and I think you have a red merle. She's a good looking dog, and from what you have told us, she's a real help around the farm. Dotti
