rooster chicken

Dallas, TX

we call him rooster chicken because in every way he acts, looks like a rooster but doesn't crow. When he gets pissed/scared he makes this like LOUD bock bock BOOOOCK bock bock BOOOOOCK over and over again until I pick him up and then he stops freaking out. Hes also a bit odd. Wont leave the coop. Just sits in the run and stares at the fence. (he was adopted from a shelter and I don't know his past...maybe an issue?)The chickens are braver than him! They spend all day out and about and he just sulks in the coop/run.
So is his crower broken maybe or is he just holding back on the good stuff for now....

do you know his age? poor guy, just spoil him through it i guess...

I don't know his age. He is full size but his spurs are only little nubs. So maybe he's just reached full size but is still not mature? I don't know. He was found by animal control walking down Main St. side by side with another rooster. His tail feathers are all broken. :( How long will that take for those to grow back normally?
I have a picture but I can't download it on this computer.
Will post it later...

Wheres his other rooster friend? maybe he's lonely? That could have been his lifelong pal, they have probably been riding the rails for years and years and here through all that they have been torn apart...

Geez didn't you see brokeback mountian?

HAHAH! Wow that's hilarious! So maybe rooster chicken will now be called Jack Twist! Aparently their falling out came before me though....the people at the shelter said that the other rooster kept attacking rooster chicken...I mean Jack. They had to separate them. Still, a broken heart can take time to mend....

Are you sure rooster chicken is a rooster? Maybe he is confused about his sex and thinks he's a hen. LOL.

If his spurs were cut off, it could be he was used in fights. (Sounds like he was not one of the winners...) Bless his little heart; you could name him Bait. Maybe he's autistic. Or really, really neurotic. He is either one brick short of a load or he was badly traumatized, is my guess, especially if picking him up calms him down.

Birds that have been mistreated quite often develop mental problems. Some parrots literally go insane. Mistreatment can include being kept shut up in a small cage among other things. Your bird sounds like he's been through a rough time in life. Extra TLC and time might make a difference.

Aaaww guys I'm gonna cry. Poor rooster chicken. I wouldn't doubt if he was used for fighting because he seems to be quite the alarmist. Very jumpy. But hes geting used to me now and will let me be in his presence with out sounding his version of the alarm. He's still not mingling much with the chicks but I'm hoping that will come after he gets comfortable that hes in a safe environment. I guess he wasn't used to having freedom to wander about in the sunshine and grass. Because he definatley stays in the coop like hes very unsure/frightened even though I leave the door open while the hens wander and graze and peck. lalala...the good life.
Well,at least there was progress today. When I got home he was strutting around with the chickens pretty happily OUTSIDE THE COOP! We had a brief bonding session that consisted of him standing on one leg and starring at me while I worked on the chicken sand box. And he did try to go lay down with the chickens tonight but he couldnt fit on their perch, fell off and was generally embarassed I think. Silly rooster chicken. So maybe their is hope for recovery!!!
