First one
Patty Pan Squash
Yummy! Nice one....I can't even plant seeds yet!
Zone envy...grumble grumble...
Claire
That's looking good. Mine are still only an inch tall. One of my favorite squashes.
Karen
Lookin' good! They're on my "next year" list, which got started sometime before I even started planting for this year.
So many yummy veggies, so little space...
How do you cook them? I love them small, just like that
those small ones like in my pic sell for seven bucks a pound in the stores
I paid for those small veggies once. I do love the little ones so. They were not even good. Not even close. The price of food has me more serious than ever about growing it, but so does the taste. Im not finding good tasty veggies. I wonder if others who buy from the grocery store end up throwing out as much as I do. I mean what do you do with 'bad' stuff.
I compost it and use it to grow better stuff!
gardenglory i steam mine or deep fry Paul
I do the compost as well. At least it will do some good at some level.
When you fry them, do you fry the little ones whole, or slice and fry.
I slice and saute in a little olive oil with some garlic, salt and pepper--yummy!
Sliced and sauteed, steamed, or in a stir fry -- it's all good. My mom used to cut them into chunks and put them in the meatloaf. That was very good, too.
Karen
whole
Certainly the baby ones could be used whole. If I steam the regular sized ones, I cut them into about 1" chunks. They would go in the meatloaf that way, too, then get sliced when you slice the meatloaf. I know it sounds weird, but it's very good. I usually slice them for a stir fry or a saute.
Karen
I cut them up in a salad.
They taste better than cucumbers and a lot more crunchy.I also like the newer hybrids of scallop squash such as Sunburst.Scallopine and Flying Saucers.

Fried with onions, in olive oil!

I would love to try this squash but can't seem to find the seeds for it. Is it a southern type vegetable? Is that it's real name? I've looked at some garden centers and they don't carry it.
Brenda
Most times it is called the White Bush Scallop and it is widely available. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61002/ There are lots of scallops, open pollinated and hybrid. White, light yellow, dark yellow, pale green, dark green and multi-colored. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/advanced.php?nn%5B89%5D=2&nn%5B1%5D=0&nn%5B2%5D=0&nn%5B55%5D=0&nn%5B90%5D=0&nn%5B91%5D=0&nn%5B92%5D=0&nn%5B93%5D=0&nn%5B53%5D=0&nn%5B9%5D=0&nn%5B23%5D=0&nn%5B10%5D=0&nn%5B12%5D=0&sname=Squash&Search.x=26&Search.y=14&offset=0
My grandmother always had white Patty Pan squash in her garden & I remember how tender & flavorful it was. I should have remembered to plant it this year. It is a good one!

wall mart has it
Thanks. I will look again at Walmart for the proper name. I was looking for Patty Pan since that is what ya'll call it all the time. :) Can't wait to try it.
Is it also sold under the variety as Peter Pan squash ? I've seen that.
Peter Pan is a hybrid green tinted Patty Pan. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61068/ These are pale green as are the hybrid Patty Green Tint http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/98868/ and the open pollinated Bennings Green Tint http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/61067/ They are similar to the white but pale green in color.
I looked at Walmart today but they must have sold out of them. I'll try to get some ordered for next year.
Went back to Walmart and looked again and lo and behold they had one package of the white scallop. I snapped it up and am happy to try a new vegetable. I'll be back for recipes when my crop comes in. Does it grow as a bush or a vine that goes everywhere? I hope to plant my seed this Saturday. We've had a lot of nighttime cold temps but it's supposed to be warming up.
Thanks,
Brenda
it grows as a bush
