How many eggs do your cochins lay?
I have some youngun's that aren't laying yet, but I also bought a trio from a guy north of me that said they were year old hens. Well, I always heard Cochins were extremely poor layers. I have had these 2 hens and roo for 7 days and have gotten 9 eggs. That's 4.5 eggs per hen per week. That isn't exactly what I would call poor. They are on the small side of a large egg too. So far, I am impressed. I know they aren't a RIR or a sexlink, but I don't think that's bad at all. I was thinking maybe 2 per hen per week. Now that would be poor to me. These I would call average. They lay every bit as good as my Easter Eggers...
Thoughts? Maybe 4.5/week is considered poor?
BTW...Cochins as Egg Layers...
We have a Blue Cochin Bantam that is a great little layer. Right now she is sitting on a nest of eggs that is due to hatch around May 10. I'm sure yours are full size, but if they lay anything like our little bantam you will be getting a decent amount of eggs.
I don't have any experience with cochins laying
yet, but what I would call great is 6 eggs a week
which I got from my leghorn. It sounds like 4.5 per
week is very good. I chose cochins as I read they
were good layers (and moms). I am hoping they
start to lay in August or Sept, I know it's really hot here
then, but I would like to see them at least start.
That's good to know about the EE's laying ability, as
I have a few of those, as well.
Our little bantam layed 4 to 5 eggs a week which I thought was pretty good considering our other bantam layed 2 or 3.
