Has anyone else had a 'missing hummingbird' problem? In 25 years the latest EVER was Apr. 27, and that was only once. I'm worried that something happened to the flock who know where our feeder is. We're the only show in town...next nearest feeder is about 35 km away.
I hope they're just holed up somewhere warmer. 3" of snow this morning and still snowing steadily! My poor rhubarb, that made the mistake of popping up two weeks ago and then froze, will probably go into retreat for a month.

Where have all the Hummers Gone?
I purchased about 4 feeders and received a beautiful one in a swap..wanted to fill them over the weekend but thought it might be too early...of course we had snow yesterday so perhaps they are laying low...will put them out this weekend though and keep a close eye on their return..such lovely creatures...
we've had geese back and moving north since mid march but yesterday was the first i heard and saw the huge flocks we normally see much earlier and it was just last week that i saw my first flock of snow geese which have generally passed thru here 10 days to 2 weeks ago - smart hummers
A female hummer arrived today so now the 2-3 males are expending huge amounts of energy fighting. And they're so cold--it still freezes here at night--they need to drink even more. But I guess no one has told them about energy conservation
Heard a LOON pass over--they live in a little lake on one side of our valley and feed in a larger one on the other side. It's one of my favourite bird calls, next to the redwings and the thrush--the one that warbles up the scale at dusk; Swainson's?
