Willhite is out of zipper cream and won't be getting any, I really would like to get some for this year's garden.
any clues? some one told me once where to get them I can't find the links
I also ordered some lady peas, they won't be getting any more of them, any idea where to get those at too?
out of zipper cream where to get them
I get all my 'cowpeas'..or most of them, from Baker Creek.
This is a good place to get peas, but they don't have Zipper. http://www.georgiasupply.com/bulkpound.asp nor does Baker Creek. Lots of feed and seed stores sell Zipper, but I don't know about your area. They are popular from Georgia to Texas. Victory Seeds use to carry them, but they are not listed now.
Edited to add: I am not growing Zipper this year, using Texas Cream 8 in its slot. If you don't have success, I can check the local seed and feeds to see if any of the still have some. Got several other cultivars tho if case you need some.

Zipper cream..... from REIMER SEEDS
I can get zipper locally but I had to plant them 4 times last year they didn't germinate well, I do't think they store their seed well over the winter, and they aren't viable, I swore not to buy any more from them, big waste ofmoney and seed is expensive, thanks i'll look these sources up
reimer seeds didn't have the zipper peas
baker creek has the lady peas, but gosh you'd have to buy l5 packs to get as many as I want, that 's way too expensive, i'm headed over to georgia supply
I may have to go local on the zipper cream I hope they are viable seed this time
is lady finger pea the same as lady pea? georgia has lady finger.
Yes, same pea. Lady aka Lady Finger.White Acre ia good substitute. If you find them locally make sure they got them this year. Southern peas are one of those that lose their viability rapidly. Should not carry them over to a second year.
thanks
FarmerD- What does that mean?
I'll check the local co-op if I go into town tomorrow. We usually have a good selection of cowpeas of various varieties. You can buy in bulk packages too. (not the little garden seed envelopes) I'll report back as to what is available. We usually have some sort of 'cream' pea and 'zipper' pea along with the regular Purple Hulls (local favorite) and Blackeye.
I'll let you know what there is, and how much each costs.
Thanks Melody,
I won't be going back into town till friday.
I just bought 2 pounds of lady pea from georgia supply. i'll buy 2 pounds of zipper cream too if they have it, because I anticipate the deer to eat half of it LOL so I want enough for me too if you would find out how much if they have the zipper cream pea, I may just get it from you if they have it. I can send paypal
oh my gosh, I just canceled my order on the lady peas, it was l2.00 to ship them to me usps parcel post I thought that would be the cheapest way but gosh it cost that much to go ups too.
so if you can get some lady finger peas i'll gladly take 2 pounds of those too.
no matter what they cost, it would be worth it for the exact shipping I'd save a ton of money LOL
Garden Glory. I did not understand your question.
A Priority Mail envelope will hold a big bag of them.....
that's wonderful. If you can get a couple pounds of the zipper creamand the lady finger, I'll be so glad to pay you for it asap. I appreciate your looking for me
FarmerD - Sorry, It was about the southern peas loosing their viability. I read it wrong, or didnt read it right. I thought you meant something other than just loosing their get-up-and-grow for the next year.
That ok, I don't always say what I thought I said. But basically I meant that germination rates for southern peas similar to onions and carrots fall dramatically the second year.
Here are the cowpeas available at our co-op. They are 2.99 for a 1lb bag and 1.99 for a 1/2lb. most only come in 1/2lb bags
Zipper (not Zipper Cream) 1 and 1/2 lbs These are also treated seeds.
Dixie Lee
BigBoy
Mississippi Silverskin
Pinkeye Purplehull 1 and 1/2lbs
Blackeye
Just let me know what you'd like to do.
Does anybody know if the zipper is the same as the zipper cream? I think it is but wasn't sure. FarmerDill? you know?
I'll take 2 pounds of the zipper if their the same thing as zipper cream, let 's see if farmer knows.
My local source is out of the zipper, and is trying to get more in, apparently there's a shortage LOL
they do have the lady pea though, so I'll try to get some of those from them. said they were also called wash day pea cause it took a whole wash day to shell a mess of them LOL probably a bad idea getting these but I want to try them.
I'm thinking the zipper is the same as the zipper cream.
I'll wait for Farmerdill's advice.
Zipper is a cream pea as opposed to a crowder. Sometimes Cream is specified sometimes not, but its the same cultivar. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/40810/
Oky dokey then, LOL I'll take 2 pounds of them, let me know in a dmail if you take paypal and your paypal addy I can pay you before you get them if you wan tme too.
Here's someone on eBay that is selling "Zipper Cream" seeds:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Zipper-Cream-Southern-Pea-Heirloom-Seeds-50+-Seed_W0QQitemZ190218915996QQcmdZViewItem?IMSfp=TL0805010963a5909
I've had good luck on buying seeds on eBay, but I have not bought from this seller, nor do I know if the auction price will end up to be reasonable.
Reimer lists them on their ordering site. Were they out of zipper cream?

I'm getting her some seeds today, but thanks for the info.
That's great - I see you were, but I wasn't sure if they were the zipper cream - I see Farmerdill says the zippers are the creams, so... good!

be on the lookout, I'm excited to get some zipper creams
I found the lady peas today from the local feed store. their having a hard time getting zipper creams seems everybody is.
said lady peas were her favorite but it takes all day to shell a mess LOL
2 pounds of Zippers went out this afternoon...you ought to have them Monday!
cool. thanks
OK...zipper cream...that is a cultivar of beans? I've never heard of it before.....gosh I learn so much in these forums....
They're cowpeas. You're probably familiar with Blackeye peas. Most grocery stores carry them either dried, canned or frozen. There's hundreds of varieties of cowpeas, each with their own distinct growth habits and taste. They're a very old heirloom vegetable with much history rooted in the south.
Here's the article I wrote about cowpeas
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/86/
it's one of my most favorite vegetables. I always have them in my garden.
I hear their the best tasting peas, along with the lady peas.
and a few others of course. I just had to try them this year
Mmmm - black eyed peas with lots of salt and pepper and some raw onions on top, some hot cornbread, and a mess of greens with vinegar, a ham hock if you have it - a meal fit for a king - or queen!
don't forget Green Tomato Relish!
CompostR...... RIGHT-ON!!!!!!! Blackeyed peas, ham hock, raw onion, and a mess of greens with vinegar!!!!! Did my Mama raise you???? Are we kin??? THAT's just what WE love!!!!
melody..... I thoroughly enjoyed your treatise on "blackeyed peas".
Great job!!! And, I , and my family before me, have enjoyed the blessings that a steaming bowl of blackeyed peas & fixins' bestowed upon our humble table at suppertime. Grandma & her grandma ....Kentuckians thru & thru, set us on the right path!
I have family from South Carolina. I went to elementary school there for a while - I loved the sandy playground with pine trees. Some kids still came to school barefoot (1960s). They had the best food - all made from scratch because that's just the way it was then.
What's in green tomato relish? Is it like hot dog relish?
oh gosh, don't cha know what their feedin our kids now? horrid stuff, I can't belive all the stuff my son says they feed him, it's all premade full of msg, I try so hard to eat healthy and feed my family healthy and they fill my son with this crap. LOL
I almost wish I had my kids back in the 60's I would have made a real good hippy LOL
