Sick Polynura

Lubbock, TX

My Polynura seems to have some critters on it. Looks like mealy moth and scale. Can you use alcohol on a Polynura or would an insecticidal soap be better?

Whitestone, NY(Zone 7a)

Hi,

Alcohol alone doesn't help much for me. I never got scale, but with mealies I'll use alcohol to kill the mealies I see (with a q-tip and/or spray bottle), and I will also use a systemic - I use BATS (Bayer Tree and Shrub), and I just water the plant with it. I think the mixture for hoyas is 2tbsp. per gallon of water.

Good luck,
Gabi

Like Gabi I've used alcohol for mealie bugs on hoyas, but prefer neem oil for scale. The only problem with neem is its smell which bothers some people. I prefer to use it outside whenever possible so the odor dissipates more quickly.
