Our little Blue Cochin has gone broody and is sitting on 3 eggs. She started out with 4 but somehow one got broken and she pushed it out from under her. She has 2 of her own eggs and my husband slipped in an egg from our Ameraucana. Will be funny looking when they hatch and she has 2 tiny babies and one big one. She may look at it and think "where on earth did that big thing come from". It will also be interesting to see what her chicks look like since the males that are with her are not Cochins. One is a silver laced polish and the other a silver sebright. We may end up with a Blue silver polish sebright cochin. :) Her eggs are due to hatch around the 10th of May.
Our little bantam Blue Cochin is sitting.
neato!

have you candled to see what you have? i think it's day 14!
No, We may try it though and see. I'm hoping she isn't sitting there on a nest of duds.
We have a Barred Rock sitting now too. She has been on the nest all day yesterday (with eggs) and all night and is still there this morning. She hollars and puffs up her feathers if we go in the pen. She is a young one, not even a year old yet. Hopefully she will hatch us out some hens :)
a breeder told me yesterday that a good broody hen will set three batches in a row for you. three days before hatch, take a new batch of eggs out to her, bring the ones she set in & put the good ones in the hatcher.
i may give that a try! but i want to leave some for the hens to hatch, i think they would be such good mamas and deserve a little reward. there are two setting and two that want to, so i think they could handle the one big pile...
They sure pick the darnedest places to nest! LOL Looks like the bottom of a fish tank stand.

it is! i got those from freecycle to support the wire brooder cage. used it for guineas to teach them where home is, then for anytime a bird needed to be separated, now using as a chick brroder to integrate them into the flock and keep them near a light/heat source till they are fully feathered...
thes nest started in the corner to the right, and they just kept mving it out. there is a board and a step ladder to the left as well as a broom. well, no both hens are on the left of the tank stand. i need to upload the more rectne pic, they look so sweet together. and tthey love it in the eving when i bring thema pan of goats milk!
LOL that is recycling!
