most fragrant lilacs??
One of my neighbors has one called "Belle de Nancy" that smells wonderful. She got it from Miller Nurseries. Here's a link for you.

I have a very nice white variety that was here when I moved in. I haven't been able to figure out the cultivar. It usually suckers all over the place and I yank them out and replant them where I want them or give them to my father in law. You are welcome to some if you want them. It has a nice fragrance that really travels well. D-mail me with your address if you're interested.
I also have Primrose and Sensation, but I don't find them very fragrant. Hope this helps.
My Persian Lilac has a nice scent - I remember a few weeks ago getting out of the car and saying...what smells so nice? Realized as I approached by yard that it was MY lilac...LOL
I gotta remember to look for that Persian Lilac!!!! But I don't thinkl I can match the deal you got on it, Chantell!!! Under $10, right?
LOL - I've not seen it again for that...matter a fact, I've not seen Walmart carrying it again since then. It was just under $10. Seems to be hit or miss with the Walmarts. I found a 'Goldflame' Honeysuckle at the one by my work - only 1 of 2 that were there...NONE at the one by my house. But gracious for $5.44 - 1 gal pot...I was amazed - considering what the 3" mail order ones run.
Back to the Lilacs...I've heard from many folks that the whites tend to have a stronger scent. I only have the Persian so - nothing to compare to first hand.
I just thought of something. There's a lilac festival in Rochester, NY every year in early May. I bet someone in the Northeast gardening forum probably goes there. You could try posting in that forum, they might have better answers for you.
Hey, look what I found-- Here's the website for the festival

Found this on the Lilac festival website. I didn't know there was in International Lilac Site

I only know about the old fashioned ones. Do these newer ones sprout badly? Love their smell!
Originally from NY - I am familiar with what I think of as an old fashioned lilac fragrance --- I bought several Miss Kim Lilacs and although the fragrance is lovely (and perfumes the yard 24/7) to me it isn't 'lilac' if you are looking for true lilac. The shrubs are more restrained than the old fashioned lilac. Very suitable for foundation plantings. It's a fragrant 'winner.'
I agree missygrosie. I bought a miss kim. it's skimpy and nowhere near the giddy smell of old lilacs. does anyone know specific names of great new ones that approximate the ones by old homesteads??
