Hardy Hibiscus

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Greetings Wise Ones!

This is the incredible disappearing post, so if it shows up at somepoint again, it's not my fault. I don't know where it's going!

Anyway, ;ast year I put in three hardy hibiscus. THey were amazing! So being the insane gardener that I am, I added three more in the fall with visions of more huge beautiful pink blossoms.

I've read that they come up late, I've even contacted the seller, but I still have no gree.

Did I kill them off? Do they fail to thrive in the Baltimore area? Did I jump the gun by planting three more of something that dies around here? How are your hardy hibiscus? Are they up and growing, yet? Do you have any green?

Help!

Blessings on your garden,
Elf

Mine sprout really late every year - usually not until well into May or June. They are showing no signs of life now.

I assume you're talking about the hardy hibiscus with the huge flowers? Like these:

Mine just started to come up like yesterday so keep watching!

Mine have NO signs of life yet either--and I have 4 of them.

I think I start seeing new sprouts about the end of May--mid June....

Hang in there!!!! One of the virtues of gardening is P-A-T-I-E-N-C-E!!!!!!

My hardy hibiscus is just beginning to break dormancy now... with the cool spring we're having, they are even slower than normal to show any life.

Hmmmm....

I saw one small shoot on my Tall perennial Hibiscus emerging from the ground.....:o)

I grew some from seed last year, but haven't seen any signs yet that they made it through winter in their little pots. I've been away for a week and will have to go and look tomorrow.

The shoots on mine are up now about 6-10 inches. I just saw first signs of life about a week and a half ago.

Both of mine started sprouting this week. They are growing at lightning speed too.

1 of mine still hasn't shown up, and 2 nearby ones have been showing green for a couple of weeks now... doesn't look hopeful for that one.

Lastelf, do you want a Rose of Sharon (H. syriacus) seedling if I've got an extra at the end of Becky's swap? Nobody has spoken up for them so far... they're one year old seedlings from winter sown seed. Seeds are from trade, and mine haven't bloomed yet either, but one is supposed to be pink. The other has lost its tag but might be from seed of 'Blue Bird' if memory serves. Please check the plant have/want thread for the swap and let me know if there's anything of mine that you'd like, since I think you mentioned somebody was willing to pick stuff up for you. :-)

A few of my seedlings from last year have finally broken dormancy. I have three with leaves, one "almost", tossed a half dozen that didn't make it. I'm taking all but one to Jody's swap next week.

I have no idea how long they take to get big, but the mama plant in a friend's yard, is about 4-5 feet tall and has long narrow leaves and large, dinner plat flowers in a pinkish red shade.

I did some serious chopping on my 2 early this spring - and they are coming back with a vengeance :-)
