With the price of eggs sky-rocketing I went and bought a box of mixed chicks. This one was in the box. This one sure has a fancy hairdo.lol.Thanks for any help.
Help with ID please
it may be called a TopKnot. a few folks here have had those and have other crested breeds, they will chime in shortly. Beautiful bird! Just remember, the price of eggs are up becasue the price of chicken feed is up LOL. So I hope you got some good layers that free range well...
Care to show pics of your others? We'd love to see...
looks to me like a polish but a cross due to wrong coloring/markings. there is a black crested white polish(should have all white body) and a silver laced polish(white and black markings) it might be a cross of the 2 but the marking don't quite match. if not my guess is black crested white polish x ? it definately has polish in it and sure is a cutie!!!
this is a pic of my white crested blue polish to give u an idea of what it will look like when older but she is a different color.
lol, tf u cross posted with me again.
after looking closer at it mabe it is 2 colors of polish crossed it does look purebreed especially in the face. they r also called top hatters, and the topknot is the big bump on it's head which is a vaulted skull. roughly how old is it and i'll tell ya if i think it is a girl or boy.
do u have any side pics of it? or a close face shot?? love to see more of it!!! what other little sweethearts did ya get???
woops forgot, lol they lay lrge white eggs and great layers but will not set for nests u never or rarely see them broody.

Looks like Moe to me.. Mr. Moe.. lol.. or might that be the Mrs?
lol, i was thinking boy, bantam and 6-8 weeks old. we'll see how close we all come to our guesses as it grows.
o, yes, it didn't occur to me that the polish come in bantam...
i put my money on SC's guess LOL
Yep. I'm convinced your chick is an Appenzeller
Spitzhauben. Considered the national breed of
Switzerland. They have a smaller and more upright
crest than the polish. They can be flighty, so it is
recommended they have a net over the top of their
pen if they go airborn a lot. I saw your pic, and knew
right away I had just seen that bird in Backyard
Poultry magazine, the Feb-Mar issue. There are
5 recognized colors, and the one you have looks
like a silver spangled. It is interesting to note that all
the photos in the BP issue came form a breeder in
your home state of Alabama. It almost went extinct in the
1930's.
What a pretty bird, and what a hairdo it has. We have a white polish that has a big poof on her head. I call it her boufant (sp?) wig.
Appenzeller
Spitzhauben!
how cool is that?
What a name, right?
Thanks for all your help with the ID of this bird.I appreciate it.
i forgot there is a few breeds resembles polish, yep that breed i think hits it right on the nail. gorgous little baby!! congrats!!
Really nice looking bird! Love the name too! Can you say that 5 times fast, LOL!
