Hi Everyone,
I am not new to DG just new to water gardens. My hubby and I watched a landscape show on HGTV this morning and we ran out and got materials and made an adorable water garden, SEE!
I need a couple of water plants to put into it and I have never had any before. Can any of you tell me what I should get? I would like something that flowers and ones that do not get too tall so as not to hide the watering can.
Thank you very much.

Try water lettuce for texture and water hyacinth for blooms. They float on top of the water and have feathery roots. They do not need to be planted in soil to thrive. When the water hyacinth blooms it sends up a bloom stalk with several flowers that remind me of the eye of a peacock feather. Water poppy might work too.
I don't have any suggestions beyond what tt said, but your water garden is adorable!
Thank you. I might have goofed already. Being the impatient person that I am I went to Lowes and bought 2 Water Lily. But they are in pots with dirt? I wanted the type that Tetley mentioned , that just float in the water. Where do I find them? Lowes didnt have any.
Lowes and Home Depot usually have some every year but I have not seen it yet. It is still too cool here to put them out so that may be why. The TexasWaterlilies company listed in the garden watchdog has them. You may also want to put a thread asking for some. They grow abundantly and perhaps someone would send you some for postage or something.
Thank you I will try that.

Very cute Susan! I can’t wait to see how it looks with waterplants :-)
Thanks everyone, I will take pics when the plants get bigger.
Very pretty, Susan. Don't you love it when you see something like that you can actually make work for your own home? Did you have to seal the barrel?
No Kaper, it is a fake barrel some sort of fiberglass material or something.
That is so cute! We are just now starting to set up our little water garden for this year. Will send a photo later. It is still too early here, really.
The best selection of aquatic plants is likely to be found on ebay, where you are likely to get a better choice of plants, reasonable photograph of the plant in its growing season, description and cultivation information, many a specialist collector lists there
Plus you can ask questions relevant to your location and your ponds aspect, of the folk that know them and grow them, in e-mails...
Compare that to many a nursery or big store, where poor choice, inadequate information and worse prices are the norm
