Have Elephant Ears, Canna, Bananas

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

The EEs are colocasia esculenta 'Fontanesii', or Black Stem pups.

The canna are Russian Red - they get very large, and are extremely prolific.

The bananas are Manzano - Spanish for apple. The fruit has a slight apple taste to it.

I'm looking for tropicals - cannas, heliconias, or tempt me.

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

How about Triangle Palm seedlings? I also have quite a few palm seeds.

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

No, thanks, I couldn't use palm seeds.

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I do have some unkown named cannas. You could look at my trade list. I'm really intrested in your bananas.

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Dean,

Do you know the names of the cannas? Can you post a picture of them?

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

No, I don't know the names of the Cannas. I planted them years ago and wasn't concerned at the time with the names. Yes, I can get some pictures of them. The only problem is they just started to bloom. The flowers have, yet to open. I do have the colors written down and may have pictures from last year.

Dean,

I like the orange/yellow (2:54 p.m.), as well as the pinks (2:56 p.m.).

If you can send rhizomes, I'll send a banana pup.

Are the two separate? Can you label the colors of what you send?

Steve

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Steve,

How many do you want for the pup? There not really pink. They are reddish in color. It must have been the way the light was shining on them that day. Sure I can label the colors to the best of my ability. I also have some purple leafed variety if you would like to see a pic of them.

Here are the purple leafed variety.

I would love a bananna pup for some canna rhyzomes.. I bought too many from the co op and have not planted them yet. They are actually growing in the box. I have:

Rosemond Cole
Striped Beauty
Stadt Feltbach
Yellow Futurity
Black Knight.. similar to what you have but only grows to about 3 ft. You may have Red King Humbert which grows to 6 ft.

all of these grow to about 3 ft. they are beautiful rhyzomes

Tammie

SKAZ421 what zone are the bananas for ?

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Dean - the reds and oranges would be fine, as long as you can keep the 2 colors separate.

flowerpower - I'm sure 8b is OK. We have 4-5 frosts here every winter (zone 9a), and they do fine. If you're concerned, you can throw a sheet over it when you know a frost is coming, although I never do.

lhasalover - I used to have about a dozen varieties, but all I have now are the Russian Red - long story. They grow to 9-10 feet - they're an awesome plant. I would love some Rosemond Cole, Striped Beauty, and Stadt Feltbach - I can send a couple of banana pups, if you'd like them.

Donna,

I can send a couple of pups. Can you spare rhizomes from the 3 cannas?

Steve

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I sure can Steve. Probably be Tuesday. 80% Rain Thunder Storms again tomorrow. You in addy exchange??

The Russian Reds you gave me last year are doing great and have multiplied

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Hi Donna,

Yup, still in the exchange.

Glad you're enjoying tyhe Russian Reds. They dominate a garden, don't they?

I can't mail until Saturday - I'm a teracher, and can't leave school to go to the PO.

Is that OK?

Steve

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

That's fine Steve

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

do either of you have a picture of your russian reds? I have two in different areas that look very much alike but there are differences and I am sure one is Russian red.. the other is most likely red king humbert. Just trying to tell which is which. I will be digging your cannas probably tomorrow... I just walked the yard and I am going to be able to dig several from different areas.

Tammie the leaves look similar to the purple canna Dean has posted above

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have durban canna I have started in pots, also a dwarf yellow seems like Wallace I would have to look for sure, if you would like to trade for EE.

Joyce

Wesley Chapel, FL(Zone 9a)

Tammie,

I think you would know if you had Russian Red. They get enormous - mine grew 8-10 feet tall in their first year, and they grow in thick clumps. One rhizome produces several more in one growing season. I have extras if you're interested.

Here's a link to the Russian Red in PlantFiles - I posted a few pictures there last year:

Joyce,

Do you have anything other than canna to trade? I'm in the process of trading for several varieties.

Steve

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

Yep.. those are Russian Reds we have... Mom absolutely loves them. they get big here but not really huge.. everything growing here is always stressed because of the extreme heat. Right now about 1/2 of mine look sick because I emptied the hot tub to change the water.. it had gotten very acidic and I could not get it adjusted properly so just drained it.. well, they do NOT like acidic water! All mottled and terrible looking now. You can see a perfect line where they got the water and those that did not.. the others look great! Going to try to dig some cannas today for the trade.. wish me luck.
