*giggles* Hey Josephine ....Cocoa_lulu said I should take pictures of this and post them for you to tell me if this is something common or if this is something rare...she couldn't' remember a name but said there are 2 that look similar one is common and the other somewhat rare.
So do tell DH found this out by the electric pole in the yard and left it since he thought it was cute
OHHH Frostweed what is this????
Oh Oh i know what this is. Well only because I asked this same question not too long ago LOL. But i know, I know! It's spiderwort or Tradescantia.
I know there are a bunch of different kinds
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/search.php?q=spiderwort&Search=Search+PlantFiles
My favorite nickname for it is cow slobber LOL. If yu cut a stem, you will see why they call it that.
I'm so happy I got to answer a question instead of asking for once woohoo! ^_^
PS and your lucky, my husband mows everything down even if it's mulched and labeled LOL I'm thinking of using crime scene tape
Spiderwort - they die down in the summer, and then they comeback in the fall again. They are stunning and wonderful plants.
thanks jojo and I am really lucky he didn't to as yours does usually that is the way it goes here unless it is stalked with a bamboo stake or is in one of the "beds" it gets cut down.
so do I need to watch it for seeds or take a cutting and put it in water to root or what???
I could move it but don't want to kill it off either by moving it
Dig it up - they move easy, tht ishoe I go the fist start of mine. Just dig them up and move!
hahahahaha gee mitch am I rubbing off on ya???..... tht ishoe.....looks like me and my typos I make and I can read it to see what it means too hahahahaha
Nope - it is this %&^$ keyboard at my inlaws... you hit butons and they dont come up.... grr...
well either way not a problem I can read typos
Thank you... I hate typos... really this computer makes some bad ones too...
at least if I have to make them I m among friends!
LOL my little one spit OJ all over my keyboard this morning so I have keys getting sticky. Looks like I need to go to the store.
They are easy to move. I brought my dainty one from Louisiana and it acted like nothing ever happened. I have some big hairy ones growing outside my fence that I have been wating to bloom. I dont think I'll invite those in the garden though LOL
Well, I love those guys. Dug up a few and put them in a 'wild' bed. These days they have spread. Don't worry if they get mowed. It won't kill them. I have some the same height as the grass and they have short blooms.
Mibus ~ did I read that right?
with a bamboo stake
You might try marketing some of your bamboo to gardeners for plant stakes... There is some growing on a local road and we often see folks cutting them for plant stakes or fishing poles. Could be a business for someone (else). 8 )
I have some spiderwort in a bed, and they are already quite leggy this year, and keep flopping over, especially after a rain. Can I trim them down a bit?
Dennis
Dennis ~ from what I have seen it doesn't hurt them. They will bounce right back.
Oh the bamboo stakes are not made form the roots it is made from the poles that were cut down before December, so they have been drying. it is the nodes with the roots or parts of the roots that will regrow not the actual poles.
once they are cut off unless you maybe stick them in water they don't sprout roots that I have seen yet.
Sorry dear ~ that was meant in good humor... 8 ))
oh no need to be sorry ......was trying to post but had others (DH) talking at the same time and lost my train of thought in a smartie pants reply ..of course if you want to be the tester ya know I can share some with ya and you can try to root it..cause ya know I share LOL
and yes the idea of plant stakes is a good one as Cocoa_lulu and I went to the plant sale in Tyler today and they use bamboo for stakes in the vines and some trees.
I love Spiderwort too, I have some blue and some fuchia pink.
Now don't y'all feel important and smart tonight? ....meant in a very good way!!
Y'all have just educated me on the plant DH found so he won't cut it down and it is pretty and I am going to have to figure out where I want to grow it and put it on my wish list to add more to my yard since it comes in more then just blue *S*
THANK YOU!!!
That looks great Anna, very healthy, and it apperas to be the fuchia pink.
Mibus and others-
I have tons of this coming up and have as much as you could want. Just let me know. I will have a 5 gal clump size to get out of the new tropical bed I am working on now. Have both colors but more blue.
Was Tyler MGC sale a good one this year ? Wish I could hae made it but...
Bring LouC when you gals come next time. Seems like I owe her some plants from Wax. days.
DD
Anyone ever seen a tall version of the Spiderwort? A neighbor of a friend had a bed of 4-6 feet tall blues. They were pretty. Always meant to catch them home and ask for a start but the friend moved and I never got back.
Sorry you couldn't make it DD.The sale was nice. We ran into Shirleygirly. Found some 9$ japanese maples. My favorite find was something an MGer had brought, sold as 'giant rudbeckia'. It doesn't have the usually foliage and I can't find any info on it. I'll get photos later for an I.D.
Pod I think rhats rhe big hairy ones I have outside my fence. I'll take a picture for you when I get outside. If you want some, I would be happy to send it to you. I also have tons of flowering wild onion out there if you want some too, It is actually very pretty
Hmmm. The wild onion that ate Texas ~ LOL. I do agree, I think the wild onions mixed with other wildflowers can be quite pretty.
These Spiderwort appeared to be quite well behaved. They hadn't spread outside that bed. Apparently yours have stayed on the outside of the fence?
Yes, I would like to see a photo.
Yes they have stayed pretty much in one spot a the corner of the fence. I did find one stray all the wayy acroos the yard, but it must have been carried or came from somwwhere else. These have thick light freen leaves with a fine hair growing all over them. I think they are the bright blue color. They are just about to bloom, and I can't remember exactly. Maybe we will get lucky and they will be blooming when I gt outside
Here's a bunch of pics of different types

Josephine.
I found it! It's cutleaf rdbeckia. Here's a photo http://my.gardenguides.com/photos/yardgranny6/photo/3485/15 I'm excited and going to plant it with some salvia azurea and upright verbena.
I was just fixing to say this was one I had that looked a lot like it.

It was a gift to me from a lady that my DH worked with. I saved seeds last year and shared them with a few others. It gets about 6 foot tall but stands up proud and straight. I thought it was never going to bloom but when it did, it bloomed for a long time. You won't be disappointed.
Missed you at Wax., hope to see you at the Buffalo swap in June.
That is really neat, I had never seen it, and it is also a native wonderful plant,
Congratulations to both of you.
