My Clay-Colored Robins (Turdus grayi) have hatched! This is the nest that's in one of my grassy orchids, hanging in front of the living room window. I'm now moving in 19 days, so I really hope they fledge by then so I can have my plant back, lol!
The first egg hatched yesterday.
My new family!
h how excited you must be
such cuties
Yes I am jordan, but it's too bad they weren't just a little cuter, more like baby chickens lol!
make sure you post pics. of their progress
So cute! Thanks so much for updating us w/ the great pics!
I know they're not the lovely hummers and such that people want to see here, but it's what I have here for the time being lol! I do have a pair of mated hummers however, that share the feeder outside my computer room window now. I love watching them at this stage, when they can tolerate each other and "play nice" lol. I'm sure the nest is nearby inside the Cypress hedge, but I looked a couple of times and couldn't see it. I'll keep looking though so I know exactly where it is. I'll definitely post another pic when these guys are a little more "presentable" or easier to look at!
They are adorable! Hope to see more pics from you as they progress. It is very exciting to see how quickly they change and fly away! Thanks for the update!
They'll fledge in 13-15 days, so you should be OK
Resin
Thanks Resin, I was just trying to find that out and it was more difficult than I suspected. I found a couple of sites and they both said about 14 days, so I'm glad about that. They did say however, that usually the female will lay another brood right away in the same nest, so I'll grab that orchid plant as soon as I see the the young leave it!
So sweet. Thanks vanman. Looking forward to updates.
Yep, my little "cuties", lol!
We are suckers for baby birdies here. Keep us updated for sure!!
What a thrill to be able to watch nature at it's fragile start. Thanks Vanman.
Well, the "kids" are just beginning to get feathers, but their large "bug eyes" are still closed. I took a couple photos today but they're not clear. I had to stand on a chair while holding onto the wall with one hand and holding the camera with the other, lol! I think they'll be cuter in a few more days!
Awwww....
Congratulations Vanillaman!
They are so cute. How did you get a picture of the nest? I can't see in any ones I have here.
The nest is in a hanging orchid in front of the living room window just above head level, so I stand on a chair and then tilt the plant a little so I can see inside it. You can see if from inside as well but I have slatted blinds on the window. If the parents see you move the blind however, they fly off the nest and get upset, naturally. I used to do that before when Mom was sitting on the eggs, just to know if she was there or not. Now the parents spend most of their time getting food so they're not at the nest much. You know how it is, lol!
Might be best not to look into the nest between now and fledging, to avoid premature departure by the chicks before they are fully ready - they will do this as an emergency predator avoidance tactic, if the nest is attacked in the last few days before fledging.
Resin
Their sweet! Thanks for the update!
It's just amazing to think these funny looking little things will be so beautiful and able to fly?!
I know Nanegoat, and in just over a week too! Unbelievable how fast they grow. That nest is really starting to look a little crowded now! Bye the way, do you have goats, lol!
vm
Don't own any, but love 'em. And would you believe my hubby's name is Bill?
That's too funny! Do you have "kids" too?
The babies are looking cute!!
Thanks nanny. They should be getting even cuter in the next few days!
A wheaten terrier and a beagle.
I used to spoon feed baby cockatiels(every two hours all day and all night.) Man, they were so ugly, they were cute.
aww, such fluff
What a difference. They are Cute!
oh, we will all miss them
They just move along too fast! So cute!
Sweet!
They are just darling...I will miss them!
Such cute babies. I'm glad you will be getting your orchid back in time for your move and that you can get the nest away from the roots before it damages them. Thanks for the updates on the babies, can you capture a pic of the parents?
I can try to photograph the parents, but they don't keep still for long. Today I saw one of them sitting on the telephone line, beside a hummingbird who is also nesting in the front garden. That would have been a good shot!
Yeah. I miss a lot of good shots, too. Love the little guys. It's always so satisfying knowing you've been a positive link in a life cycle.
