I am visiting San Diego for the weekend and I would like to buy Bird of Paradise rhizomes. Where is a good nursery or source in San Diego? I want to mail them back home to myself so that I don't have to take them on the plane for my flight home. Thanks in advance for your help!
Help me find Bird of Paradise rhizomes in San Diego????
Do you mean Strelitzia? If so, I can't speak for San Diego but up here I never see anything for sale but actual plants (but the plants are everywhere...even places like Home Depot!).
Yes, Streletzia. Thanks, ecrane, for your reply. So if I bought a mature plant, would it ship easily? I am not sure how to ship the plant.
I'd rather not start from seed as I read in plant files that it would take 3-4 years before I see blooms.
All help is appreciated.
They seem like pretty tough plants so I think they'd ship OK but it'll be expensive. Most of the time when I see them they're in 3 or 5 gal pots, maybe you might be able to find one in a 1 gal pot but I'd be surprised if you found anything smaller. Honestly you might be better off just asking one of your local nurseries to order one for you, I think you'll save yourself money in the long run if you do it that way. Or you could wait and check your Home Depot and Lowes in the summertime, wouldn't surprise me if they had them in your area too.
These plants are very very common here, they're even used on medians! As ecrane said, they're usually sold in 1gal, 5gal pots.
Why don't you buy a little 1gal and stick it in your carry-on?
Well the carryon is packed to max.
Also I didnt; know if security would like me bringing living items on the flight.
just so you know, BOP's don't take too kindly to their roots being messed with. don't be expecting flowers anytime soonif you have it shipped bare root
Ah thanks, thats good to know.
