Hatching eggs, healthy feet and screen?

Lodi, United States

I remember some of you on the forum discussing putting in screen (1/4"?) to help the chicks' feet when they hatched. What exactly do you do? I am going to use my still air incubator as the hatcher. Do I just put down some hardware cloth under the eggs? How quickly do they need to get onto it to help them? I will be at work the day they are due to hatch, so I want everything set up to work as well as possible. Any help appreciated!

Hi
Does your incubator have a screen in it? Mine does so the eggs don't sit on the bottom with the water they are susupended above the water. That screen is 1/4 inch (as a rule) Just follow the incubator instructons and then leave them in the incubator for 24 hours to help their feet, I always had and only had on guinea with curls toes and I think he was the one that had a hard time hatching. This past hatching I took them right out and had lots of curled toes. Here's the link to the silkie site about that, I for one am convinced!! http://www.silkiechickens.com/learn.htm

Thank you LoraK! So that is the screen. I wasn't sure. Yes mine has it. I am very anxious about their health. I hope to have very good news next week!

That is a wonderful site...so much useful information!
