Please Help with Bulb ID! Heirloom Bulb

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

hi guys,
i was hoping that some of you might recognize this plant from the foliage only, no blooms yet. it is growing at my great grandmothers old place that has been abandoned for over 20 years, so it must not need much attention. i kinda reminds me a bit of amaryllis leaves since they are kinda wide and strapy, but the color is very light green. i am planning on digging them and putting them in my garden and would love to know what they are so i can plan where to put them. thanks

Gotta be crinum, tracie. A wonderful old passalong plant that you will love. Don't know about Texas, but here mine take full to part sun. the bulbs will probably be pretty big when you dig, so be prepared for that. It may also not like being moved and won't flower this year. You are lucky to be able to have something so special from you grandma's garden:-)

Looks like crinum to me to and they are pretty difficult to dig without cutting into a few of the bulbs. I clump that size has several.

...or maybe bending your shovel, lol!

aggie,

I'm jealous, wish my granny had crinums...

crinum herbertii types also known as milk and wine lilies are common passalongs in the deep south, it's quite likely that could be what you have. At any rate, what a score!! I dug some crinums today and it seemed to help to start about 1-2 feet away from the plant to give enough room to dig deep....I excavated as much root as possible before lifting the bulbs. The ones you have will be majorly clumped but I bet with some serious fert and individual space they'll bloom nicely....and if you ever have too many..

not sure there's such a thing as too many crinums ;)

I love them, if they were edible I'd have to figure out a way to live off them...lol...currently it's the bulbispermum and herbertii hbrids I'm infatuated with but I like them all
