Summer Snowflake, Snowbell, Dewdrop (Leucojum aestivum)

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

jftonk,
I think this should be classified as L. aestivum rather than L. vernum.
The Royal Horticultural Society's Manual of Bulbs differentiates the two by number of flowers per scape. The former is fls. 2-7; the latter says fls.solitary, occasionally 2.
Pic in question has 3 plus.

Also, the summer snowflake (aestivum) blooms in April/May.
The spring (vernum) one blooms in Feb.-March. (D.G. Hessayon - The Bulb Expert) Photo post is in April.

jftonk, do you have any thoughts on this? I'd be happy to move the photos if they are in the wrong entry.

L aestivum blooms here in January-early March: bloom time alone is not a good indicator of species on most bulbs--very true on bulbs in the deep south.

I don't grow L vernum so I'll state that right up front. However, I have never seen the green spots on every single petal of L aestivum like that specimen has either. I do grow L aestivum, and gave away tons of it to DG'ers this spring.

Also the date the PlantFiles entry was made is not always the date it was actually blooming.

Can anyone else offer some insight on the difference between Leucojum vernum and Leucojum aestivum?

Joan,

I just now saw your message, after I submitted a request to move the photo. Thanks much.

Thank you for jogging my memory on this one. I did pick up a book for Christmas that was able to verify that your photo is, indeed, of L. vernum. I was reading on a business trip, and then when I got home I plum spaced it out. Sorry about that. I'll move the photo right now.
