What are red sexlinks

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

I found out that my order of Buffs was now going to be back-ordered till May 13th, so I cancelled it.

We went to TSC this morning to maybe get some of whatever they had, and they said all they had were black sexlinks, and red sexlinks.

Since I have Aussies, I decided to get the red sexlinks, but don't know anything about them. What can you tell me about them. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Hi Granny! This is a link to the Wikipedia site that describes the sort of crosses that go into red sex-links. I think it usually involves a RIR roo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sex_Link

If you google Red Sex-Link chickens and go to the Wikipedia site, there are descriptions of many kinds of breeds and crosses. Neat.

Thanks, Catscan, my mind is frazzled (NOT frizzled) today, so I couldn't think.

I have one red sex-link. She's the smartest chicken of the bunch.

Yep, found that out yesterday. I have one who has already found out how to get out of the brooder box. But, when I picked her up, she just cuddled right down in my hand like she lived there. I reached down to put her back in the brooder and she just politely hopped down as if she had been doing that all her life. I think I am going to thoroughly enjoy these little girls.

glad you like them. we hve our own red sex link, a cross between BestBuckeye and Roadrunner the SC Brown Leghorn. She was named Chuck after that new FBI comdey show that didn't make the cut LOL. here she is just the other day reclining with her master on MY porch swing...

here is a closeup of her coloring. she started out looking more like a partridge but is coloring in red with black like a Buckeye. keeping her lacing from her Leghorn mother...

Well, it looks as if I got some little escape artists. I am going to have to turn the brooder box around and let the little ones run around the pen and see the big ones sooner than I had wanted. DH went out earlier and another one had gotten out of the box. So, they will still be able to get under the light and stay warm, but will also be able to get out into the larger area and look at their future housemates.

They decided to be flighty now, so since I don't have much time to devote to them, I guess they will be like the ones I hatched out and act as if they don't know who I am.

can't put a lid on it?

Hey Tamara...your RSL looks a lot different than mine. She is the one in this pic on the far left. The others are RIRs and our Buff orp roo (who is still in the freezer). :)

I wont tell you what I call our one RSL...but she is the only one we have ever had, so I cant say it has to do with the breed. One thing I will say is that she walks like a German soldier. She picks each foot all the way up to her belly with every step. It is too funny. Here is another with her on the left in the front.

Hi mcamden--I think red sex-links can have different mothers. That is the father is always, I think, a RIR--but the mother can be any white feathered breed--Delaware, White Leghorn etc...... So they might look different and behave differently too.

Melissa, yours looks like a RIR Delaware cross, or more of a gold sex link which is a buff/barred cross.

mine was accidental. Roadrunner was just head over claws for PerfectBuckeye ^_^

so the coloring was red roo over partridge hen, so not even sure if we had a male if the coloring would be different. but i have LOTS of white eggs in the bator, so we will soon see!

i also have some Black/Brown crosses. need to look that up and see if i can tell sexes on those... hopefully the ones with gold flaking are pullets!

i hear that some gold sex link breeds have been developed that are just lovely!

granny, are they behaving yet?

So weird. Doesnt seem too scientific to me. ;) But she does lay nice eggs, so that is all I care about.

TF, I don't know, they were pretty quiet when we came home and I checked. So, maybe they will. Of course, you have to remember, I don't make pets out of them as we want them for eggs and meat. When they see me coming with the egg bucket, the grown ones come running to the fence to see what kind of goodies I am bringing them. They also do that when the neighbor comes over on his 4-wheeler or 6-wheeler. They learn right quick that that means goodie buffet.

We haven't given the little ones treats yet except some rolled oats I had on hand. We also gave them some find grit. But the tiny ones are only a few days old, so that will have to wait until they are at least two weeks old before they get grit and oats. The older biddies seem to like their starter food better than the oats, so they may not get oats in the future. We shall see.

Just noticed on one of the threads that DE is good for ants. We are having a problem this year with them, so I am going to get some and try it. I have been using boric acid, and although that works, I would like to try something else for a backup. Besides, the boric acid is messy.
