Native southwestern clematis drummondii, I have boys, anyone have girls to trade?
clematis drummondii, trade male for female
Didn't realize there were boys and girls!
Clematis drummondii is this the same native vine we call Old Man's Beard. It grows wild along all the barbed wire fence lines. Has a teeny tiny white with red flowers. Is the larval host for Fatal Metalmark (Calephelis nemesis) and Falcate Metalmark (Emesis tenedia) butterflies. Also serves as a nice nectar source for lots of butterflies out here.
It truly grows everywhere!!! How do you tell them apart?

Hi Cat!
No red on the drummondii I'm afraid, something about the drummondii though is that there are no petals at all. There are quite a few clematis that go by the name old man's beard and they are not all male and female, but this one is :( I'm not gonna get any beards with my guy lol The plants are pretty easy to tell apart if they're blooming, my guy just started blooming for the first time today and he's all stigma, no pistil :( If they're not blooming you can't tell, isn't that terrible.
Sadly I get no cats on mine, never have seen those butterflies here. I only just started trying to draw them in the last 1-2 years and in the desert it takes awhile, you probably know that though.

Will have to take photos of the clematis drummondii at the ranch if I go this weekend. Had a photo of the tiny flowers (not the fluffy stuff) - but could not find it on my computer.
