Stinky Hoya Blooms... can they be stopped?

Charlotte, NC

Long story short...

Hoya is growing indoors until the weather perks up a little more. Hoya is blooming. Blooms stink up the whole room (only scented at night) + 2 adjoining rooms, one of which is the baby nursery. Wife is complaining!

Could I remove the flower heads, and thus the smell, without damaging the peduncles and future flower production from the same sites? I'm really just after a quick fix for the flowers. How about soaking them in something to wash away the scent? I don't mind just cutting off the flower heads if that's what it's going to take.

Any ideas?

You will not hurt the peduncles by removing the flowers. They will bloom in the future.

yes...just be sure to not break the peduncles off. Just take the individual flowers off from it. That would also save the clean up from them all dropping on the floor after the bloom. Ha.
I know they can become intense in the house at night.

My daughter was forced to do that with a carnosa that had 12 umbels of flowers open at once. Her son (3-1/2) said his nose hurt...

Thanks everyone... I'm going to get the scissors out now and start snipping flower heads.

Well, I've gotta ask MullettMan...which Hoya is it that's so stinky?? DS-70 runs us out of the room, so I know exactly what you're going through!

I believe it's this one.

The plant only has about 6 umbels open right now but boy does it stink at night. Actually I don't really think it "stinks" but it certainly has an odor. Doesn't matter what I think though because my wife said it gives her a headache and I worry my 7 week old son might get bothered by it too (if he's anything like his mother *LOL*).

ROTFLMBO, threegardeners!!! And yes, MM, congrats on both the little one and the flowers, even though the flowers had to go!

This thread is just too hilarious. Between MM with his flower-killing montage..and 3G's passing out at the sight of the flower massacre - I'm rolling on the floor.

MM, congrats on your little rugrat.

Beautiful Plant MullettMan: How is the little mullett doing these days? 7 weeks old already ... bet you and your wife are seeing lots of changes!

Did anyone know the ID on that particular hoya? I love the foliage as well as the bloom.
