Anyone have any plants to share with new pond owner?

Deer Park, IL(Zone 5b)

I have already waaayyy over spent my budget on the new pond and the husband will kill me if I spend anymore but I can't stand the thought of only one lousy plant in the pond all summer. Would anyone here be dividing up their pond/bog and or marginal plants this spring? I would love a piece or two or three and am willing to pay for the shipping. I live in zone 5 Please contact me!

Signed,

Frustrated Ponder without enough plants . . .
(sniff, sniff, this is the part when your supposed to feel pity on me. . .LOL!)

What is the weather like up there? I always have extras but some of them dont like cold.

mothermole..i found watercress today at Safeway. I believe in your area ..Dominic's if the local "safeway".
It is really neat.. It is packaged by Live Gourmet and it is hydroponically grown and sold in Individual bags with the roots still
on the bunch. I bought some to add to my pond. It can get rather
large, but can be pruned to keep in check. Koi are also supposed to enjoy nibbling on it. The best part it was only $2.39 for a large bunch!! Only 15 calories per serving..LOL!
Look in the fresh herb section....its in a orange and green package.

Are you in the address exchange? I looked and could not find you. Things are just starting to poke their heads up here. I do have a lot of yellow water iris if you want starts of that. It is very hardy and has nice lemon yellow blooms. It is more of a marginal plant but I have grown it in water of about eight inches or so.

Oh mothermole we are on the same boat, although I did find most materials for my llittle pond by bargain hunting all winter, now I came to the realization that more money for this pond is not an option. So everything will be happening very very sllloooowwwly in my new pond.
So far all I have in there is 4 goldfish and one miserable underwater plant that i got at Petco. The thing around my area (Boston, MA) is that is hard to find any pond supply stores; and for getting anything online they want to charge up to $18 for shipping. I went to Lowes and HD and neither had pond plants.

I also germinated some Lotus seeds inside the house, so basically that's going to be the next plant I put in the pond.

I know you can get taro roots at the grocery store too and they can be potted for your pond! Some of the cannas too. If you look in the trade lists for specific things you can probably hook up with someone that has what you want.

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

In FL, I used canna and in my pond, just the regular yellow or orange from HD or Lowes at $4.99 a pot. They generally get them when it's a little warmer. In the sun, they flower like crazy. I didn't even take mine out of the crummy little 4" pot it was in. I just stuck it in like that. I'm sure it would have expanded in size and done better in a larger pot with potting soil. Oh, put the pot into a stocking and pull the stocking up around the soil and gently settle the pot into the water so the pot fills up gradually and doesn't push all the soil out. Also, the stocking will keep the fish from eating around the plant roots and getting the water dirty or uncovering the plant. I treated my canna as an annual rather than trying to overwinter it.

That is good to know because I have an Elephant Ear and 2 Caladiums that I dug out and overwintered in the basement. So if they come back to life it will be perfect to plant in the border.

What a great idea with the stocking! Also you can go to Micheals or a craft store and buy some cheap lotus pods and take the seeds out and start them. I have seen where several DG'ers have done that and they sprouted. You can buy some pretty cheap plants from ebay too, cheaper than some of the specialty pond stores.

Thank you Bev and Bernadette for your generous packaging of plants for my pond. It was very fun to get a mystery package from each of you (I felt like a little kid on Christmas). If I can ever help you out in anyway please let me know and also, I am more than willing to send postage for the plants and packaging - let me know your addresses.

Anyone have extra water hyacinths to share or trade or donate for postage? No one will ship them TO Florida, so I can never get any for my ponds. :(

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

That's because they're illegal in Florida. How many do you want?LOL

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

How illegal are they in Tx? LOL
I seem to remember my mother having them in her pond when I was a kid, maybe they weren't back then...

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

Looked in my little water pond today. And I am the proud owner of a baby water hyacinth. Purchased a small one at lowes several weeks ago and it has just now warmed up enough out there for it to send out an offshoot. I have three water lettuces now too! Mom lettuce and two small babies. Proud grandma here. :^)

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

budgielover....I seriously do want some, lol. I know they're invasive in Florida, so they don't allow them to be shipped in. I have man made, hand dug, contained koi ponds built inside my decks. They aren't going to go anywhere (except maybe inside my koi) If you really want to share some, please send me a d-mail.
:)
