So far your guess is it! LOL

Our Rouen ducklings are darker with the lighter heads and like stripes through the head around the eyes...don't think it is Rouen...Wish I had a camera for you to compare.
I would guess Peking as they are more yellow, but don't have a glue about the little guy with the brownish head. They are cute no matter what!

Hi All, I have a baby duck ? We have 2 baby ducks and I was told due to the fact they were hatched in an incubator they can't go in water because they don't have the mothers protective oil till about 2 months old.Does anyone know if this is true or not?How do you keep ducks out of water?LOL They said they would get chilled and die.Any help appreciated. TY

Hi kelboindy, TO start with you are from my home state,Go Hoosiers" lol Shelbyville here, but, live in Michigan now.
I assume TSC is Tractor Supply? If so that is where we got our two babies and I would say the dark headed one is an India Runner and the lighter ones are Peking. They had them mixed here also and they said the two in the bin were Peking and India Runners. The Runners will stand stright up in the air when they walk. Good Luck

It is true. The duckling will get their fluff wet and can drown so the water for them has to be in a waterer...even then be prepared to clean up after them...they shake water all over. LOL. Ours are in a kiddie pool with 18" sides...an inch of sand on the bottom and now after 2 weeks 1/2 of the pool is elevated by padding under the pool so the water stays lower in the pool...with 2 beach towels folded under the waterer to help soak up the excess! They get extremely cold after getting wet and they insist on getting wet! We finally had to resort to a couple old sheets for the sand on the higher side and that is where the lamp shines down on them and they go there to sleep. It is almost worse than changing a new babies diapers...because at least a baby has it all confined somewhat. Not so with the Rouens...they manage to soak everything and it needs to be changed at least twice daily...LOL...so much for the empty nest syndrome!
Once they are feathered out they will have the required body oil to repel the wet and will do fine...Now I just have to tolerate the mess for a little while longer! ;-)

Jeri, TYVM I really appreciate the info.Yes,they do make quite a mess LOL we have ours in a large dog crate that you transport the dogs in.How old r they when they feather out?? All I know is when I was a kid I had a duck and it lived outside and played in the water.Seems like everything is much more complicated now than when I was a kid.I knew I shoulda stayed young forever!!! LOL :) TY again Kae

Speaking of ducks I just got an email from Ideal that they have mixed ducks for $2.20 each but they have to ship tomorrow or Wednesday. They have 500 available and you have to call them at 254-697-6677 ext
5410, 5409, or 5405 if anyone is interested.

Paul won't let me get ducks this year :-( He's sure I'm over extending myself and will be sorry ^_^ Well if he would pick up after himself it would save me a lot of work!!!

I just finished cleaning up after the little sweethearts...Again! I will be glad when DH gets the duck area finished for them... close enough for a light at night and on sandy ground for the water to absorb away from them until they feather out. I looked through all the duck info that I have and no where did I find when they should be feathered out...must assume that it will be slower than chicks and poults as those guys already have wing feathers coming in...the Rouen ducklings--none as of yet. They will produce their own oil for their feathers at 3-4 weeks of age. I keep old toweling for them to maintain their balance-- otherwise they slip and slide around a lot. This is the first time that we have raised "orphan" babies of any kind so it is another new experience for us. DH just loves HIS birds (guess I had nothing to do with it ;-) ) It will be 18 mos before these ducklings will be full size so we are invested for the long haul. Next year hopefully Mommy Ducks will take over!

Yes,I know what you mean about"cleaning up" again!! It seems like thats all I do anymore. But,they are worth it,they are soooo cute.My little chihuahua,Sasha, just loves them.Don't know if I told you how these came about.I had lung surgery in Nov. and I stayed at my sons house for two weeks after to be near the hospital.Well,my grand-daughter,Hannah,age 3,told me she thought she needed a pet and it should be a duck and it had to be white and she would call it,r ya ready"Pony".She told grandpa and he said she would need 2 so they wouldn't get lonesome.Well, she was very happy about that and decided the other duck would be "Snowy",because there was snow on the ground and it is white. We keep them at our house cause we live in the country and they live in the city and allow no pets, don't have time say mommie and daddy. So,there u have the story of Hannah and her ducks"Pony and Snowy".And grandma gets to be,what else, grandma and care taker.I love it!!!
