Hey. I just fell in love with passion flowers. Can y'all please recommend your favorite passiflora suppliers. I want to buy some, but I don't know who to buy them from. I got some seeds from wal-mart, but they didn't germinate. Would seeds even bloom for me this year? I'm in Zone 7a, so I'm pretty sure these are an annual for me.
name your supplier please :-)
I just received a couple of very healthy plants from Zone 9 Tropicals this past week. I have also been very happy with orders from Grassy Knolls. Most passies take 2 years to bloom from seed, but seed prices are usually a fraction of the cost of a plant. They can take months to germinate so don't give up. Also, you really need to have a spot inside or a green house to overwinter most passies. The exception would be P. incarnata and a few others--many/most passies come from the tropics! Another option is over winter your plants as cuttings, but they don't always root.
Hope this helps!
Mark
PS - Here's one of my favorites: Blue Eyed Susan
Hi 3 gardeners,
I love www.Logees.com for all plants, including passifloras. My favorite though is www.georgiavines.com. The owner is very knowledgable and can answer any of your questions. She has a few that would survive in your area from roots. Definitely give that website a look. Plus, she has free shipping on some items!
Ebay is another possibility. Also try www.waysidegardens.com for the new Passiflora "Sherry".
Kartuz Greenhouse has a great selection of all things Tropical. http://www.kartuz.com/c/5PAS/Passion+Vines+A+to+L.html
Man, are those things expensive! Esp. for an annual in my area.
That is what I thought at first too, but when you get your new "baby" from Logees or georgiavines, you realize it was worth it. They are healthy plants ready to go, and you can always overwinter them indoors.
my best passi's came from impower56 on ebay
jlp222 - do those "babies" bloom the first year? Why have I heard that seed growing won't produce flowers until the 2nd year?
jordankittyjo - I've gotten a lot of nice plants from ebay. I'll check impower56 out.
Thanks y'all.
If you start seeds early enough they MAY bloom the first year. Some passi seeds take months to germinate, let alone grow big enough to bloom. The ones you buy from Logees, and georgia vines should bloom this year with no problem.
