Yaupon - The Monster from the Deep!

Joey in Conroe, TX(Zone 8b)

Here's how I sent my afternoon. I will be putting beds in my backyard soon, and needed to rid myself of some of these yaupon before I put anything in. This one plant from around one oak tree! I have about 4 more to go. Gotta stock up on ibubrofen!

All of the pieces, and I probably only got about 70%, some of it was just too deep

LOL jojoringer,
Don't you just luv yaupons...hehehe I have them too... we are only about an hour or so from each other, and I started a bed 6 years ago, and still pulling little plants out !
I think you would have to dig straight down to "CHINA.".. and still probably find some there too !! Our woods are just full of them, but they are pretty, especially the females if they have a lot of berries...just don't want any in my beds !!

Are you talking about Yaupon trees or dwarf Yaupon trees?? I've had some 2 year Lantana roots that were nearly that size!!! We'll maybe half but insanely huge..

LOL I don't think there is anything dwarf about these Angel, the ones straining at my back fence are 8 - 10 + feet tall!
I have waged such a personal war against these buggers that I can't remeber how pretty the berries are!
I don't think I'll ever be rid of them but at least I won't be watering this monster while trying to water my new beds, can you imagine?

I can't understand why some people go out and buy these things. Yaupon can form impenetrable boundries. They seem to prefer growing just under a live oak canopy making it impossible to get rid of without harming the live oak. We have them in our pastures surrounding the live oaks. Out in the open they form great big moats.

I know what you mean. They fit so closely under the oaks that it is impossible to pry them loose. They get so thick if left alone that they are havens for snakes. Thats another reason I need them under control in the yard, I have a curious 2 year old that is willing to catch and possible taste anything he can get his hands on.
I've seen them in the garden centers around here selling for $20 a gallon. I just can't imagine! Anybody that wants some is welcome to come get all they want!!

I want to see some photos!! I have dwarf yaupon shrubs and one yaupon tree. It isnt growing much at all after 6 yrs though.

Hi,
AngelG1111.... I think you are talking about something else... I don't know all the plant "names, so hope somebody else will chime in..We are talking about "natives"... they grow wild in our area . .. they are a pain to remove.
And if someone wants some east of jojo... I will help dig !!... sorry jojo... I know this is your thread.....just had to... hehe

Oh, my, what a mess those roots are. It might be easier to just move! I feel for you trying to get all those out. Better make that ibuprofren an industrial size bottle. Good luck.

There is an oak tree to the right. If you look carefully, you can see where the oak ends and the yaupon begins. In my wanderings through plant websites I have come across mention fo dwarf yaupons, but I don't know how 'tame' they are.

I love yaupon holly! I love all hollies and have a wide variety including a weeping yaupon. The attached pic does not do the plant justice. To each her own, variety in our gardens keeps things interesting and makes touring fun.

LOL no problem beck! Between the 2 of us we could share yaupon across the US (then change our phone numbers LOL)
I took some pics for you Angel, when I get PSP reloaded on my computer, I'll post some later tonite. I do think we are talking about different things. These things will spread all over the yard, I have them coming up in my lawn, we just keep them mowed, but they are not too pleasant to walk on.
That weeping yaupon is beautiful. I wish mine would behave so nicely LOL

Here is one picture from over my back fence. This one is about 15+ feet tall, the fence is 8 feet.
