My brother saw this on Dirty Jobs

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

He was watching the show where the guy was working in a horse stable. I guess he soaked up horse urine with straw in which they used in compost to speed up the compost process. My brother was saying it had something to do with urea in the horse urine which was great for composting. Anyone know anything about this?

They used to use horse bedding in the old fashioned "hot bed" for starting plants. Should be great.

Urine is high in nitrogen so it is a good starter for hot compost. If you don't have a horse, you can use your own.

OOOH! Katiebear,

I'm not sure I really wanted to know that bit of information! LOL!
However, my garden plot is 1/4 mile away from the house - should I set up a straw pile to relieve myself in if I realize there is no way on earth I can make it back to the house?

That would work.

You can also keep a bucket handy.

Thanks Katie. I have already made a few trips to the pile.

OMG! I thought the original post for Dirty Jobs said he soaked it up with a straw...as in a straw and his mouth! ROTFL!

Beth you could make a real throne out of a bale of straw.

This forum is always so funny!
