Too many.
Anyway, I purchased two pots of this milkweed, and have kept them in the pots so that it would be easier to protect the baby cats from the wasps. It looks like there's actually three plants in each pot, and the plants in these two pots dry out much more rapidly than my other milkweed plants that are planted one per pot.
What should I do? Should I attempt to repot them into their own individual pots?
Thanks for any advice.
Jo
Milkweed has many yellow leaves at base
What happened with your Milkweed since this post....just curious
I have the same problem. Stressed mw from being in a pot. I had tons of milkweed plants that had not emerged forcing me to buy some at the local nursery. I left two A. curassavica in a pot. These plants really pout in pots. Must keep watering them everyday or the heat will wilt them. That tap root wants to be in the ground, so in the ground they will go tomorrow. I also noticed that both potted plants are full of yellow aphids and, luckily, lady bug larvae. Stressed plants really attract the bad bugs.
Thanks! Unfortunately, my plants in the ground the last two years were COVERED in aphids. UGH So far, these plants don't have any aphids, except for the one planted in the much larger pot! (And I'm keeping it away from the others, now.) Go figure.
Stressed or not, milkweed draws the aphids.
Are you still experiencing yellowing leaves?
Not as badly - mostly on one plant.

Jo, my mw does okay in pots the first year and then decline after that so I put them in the ground. If I don't have any in pots to feed the cats I cut stems and put them in saran wrap covered Oasis bars. They wilt but the cats eat them pretty quick.
Some of my mw gets yellow leaves near the bottom and I'm not sure what causes it. I thinkit's because my garden is too rich for them, I think they prefer lean soil.
Deborah's right...that tap root wants to go deep and the pots prevent that.
If I plant my milkweed in with my other flowering plants, will the aphids move to them?
I use to grow many roses for years, so aphids have been the bane of my existence for years. :(
I just hate those little critters, almost as much as the slugs!

The aphids seem to always find my mw, but they are so easy to get rid of.......just put a glove on and squish away. Don't forget to wash the glove LOL
If the aphids aren't on your MW, bet it's been treated w/ insecticide. I learned this the hard way when I bought MW and moved my cats to it. They were dead within a day. If the aphids can't live on it, likely the cats can't either.
RE: yellow leaves- try pulling the plant out of the pot and checking the rootball. I've found that most plants that need more water than makes sense are root bound and there's not enough soil. If that is the case, tease the roots apart before or after soaking for an hour in Superthrive. Sometimes you have to start by simply slicing off the bottom roots and teasing them apart. I've found that if I put the plants in my shady "plant nursery" for a couple weeks and water diligently while new roots form, I don't have trouble with the taproot issue.
