I am the seedling parent of this one having been lucky enough to get these seeds from a seed draw from the BGI seed bank in 2005. This is a Mary Haik cross and for sure to be a winner. Unfortunately at this time I have many brugs showing a mottled coloration (you can see Painted Lady in the photo doing the same thing) due to some recent extreme variations in temperature so it will be impossible right now to determine what her true coloration will eventually be but for right now I am willing to bet that she will be pretty darn dark. The first thing I want to say about this flower is how thick and waxy the corolla is. In fact you must be careful in how you handle it because the tendrils are so thick they snap like pretzels. As the bloom was developing and I felt through the calyx I thought this might be a double because it was so thick and fat. The corolla is 5" (12.7cm) across and faces straight outwards, the length of the calyx to tip of the corolla is 9.5" (24.13cm) long so we are looking at a nice sized flower. I am getting my sense of smell back and i can determine that there is a fragrance but I can't quite give an accurate description. I really think that this is going to be one for the books. Congratulations Mary!! I LOVE THIS ONE!!! and m sure you will too!
**New Seedling** L'amore x Rothkirch by Mary Haik
You are a very lucky seedling parent! Love the pictures:-)
Gary, even with the mottling, the blooms have so many positive aspects. Do the blooms eventually nod or are the nodding blooms in the second photo something else? I'm glad your sense of smell is returning! It's been a long time. I bet it's felt like years.
Gary, I like the mottling color and the shape.
Betty the blooms always stayed facing outwards. the other bloms that you see are Painted Lady blooms hanging down from above.
Another great one Gary ! you have grown out some nice one's this year.
Beautiful ,beautiful I'm drooling..
Just beautiful!
I'm sorry Gary.. you can't mention BGI here at daves... I was recently scolded for inappropiate posting.. and had my posts deleated... for mentoning buying seed crosses from a male German breeder which had as parents ..that unavailable in the US ..or at a high price..that brug .. as NO mention of a product ...firm ...individual... here... or the wonderful sites and wonderful brug forums ..at BGI or ABADS..or their fine free...seed banks.. I'm so sorry there boy.. FYI>>> CYA

edited to say..
Great looking flower there Gary.. I planted some of yours up on the roof today.. I think daves will let me post pictures of them... or did I send some paynent to you of some sort..like stamps or a plant..which would make mentioning it or you for that matter again...a . .NO-NO..
I thought the mentioning rule here was about self promotion.. but I was told by Dave's admin department.. mentioning any comercial store..plant..product service was not allowed..whch would include home depot..Lowe's..The Dollar Store spray - n - grow... messenger... sears.. miracle grow.. or do you like me feel these guidelines are inforced at some whim of said admin department.. good gardening they say..

huh?
Beautiful flowers.. and when will cuttings be available for this? I would love to see how it does in my extreme heat in West Texas.
Hey, Gordon, guess I can't mention I am going to Home Depot tomorrow to buy weed killer.. my trumpet vines are coming up again... guess it is time.. I did not work on them at all last year so they have decided I am going to let them grow.
My "Texas Pink" is very happy in the ground and is putting on many new leaves... can't wait for it to decide to really shoot up.. right now it is more interested in spreading. Glad I gave it space.
Tammie
what is "Texas Pink?"
ALOHA Tammy...
nope... you surely can't mention anything of the sort... you might be able to say the name of the weed killer... as I don't think it's part of the plan here to sell it.. My mothers twin sister.. now living in an assisted living comunity..has a spray bottle she has round-up in...she uses it on some of the offencive shrubrey about the place she lives... A quick spray as she passes by.. week after week.. Their maintance staff is a bit perplexed as to why some of the things are now dead.. but she's opened up the entrance..and has allowed me to plant a couple of brugs.. in their place flanking her doorway.. in MS.
OH..Texas Pink is a great pink brug I got from a man I can't remember his name though..and he's not been about lately...in Texas...it was one of my first gifts from a member here.. the brugs name was missing..so I started calling it Texas Pink while working with it..on the roof... and when I sent it out I'd label it that...so I'd know what I was sending out... Interestingly.. Ken said he got a big pink at a sale day there in TX.. which was unnamed and had what sounds to me a bunch of similar characteristics..
Gordon With 3 dozen brugs inside... that are happy they didn't go out yet with the other 2 dozen already outside.. [ although they were jealous yesterday ]
OK, how big is that roof? 5 dozen BRUGS??? I can't imagine the space it would take to grow them....and the water and fertilizer! LOL Your garden has to be amazing. As for the weed killer.. I use two different vegitation/weed killers mixed double strenght together to kill that d*** trumpet vine. I wear plastic gloves and use paper towels to shield other grass and plants around them when I spray. I just smile as I walk by those green growing monstrosities because I know a couple squirts from that deadly mix and they are GONE for a few months. We fought that stuff for years before I discovered this formula by accident.. mixed and forgot what I had mixed so mixed more... it worked. We keep it away from dad.. he would kill EVERYTHING in his path with it. Have a bottle hidden at his house to use when I am there.
Tammie
Tammie..
well maybe I didn't get it quite right as to the number.. it was off the top of my head...but you got me wondering..as I've never counted.. and had really no idea...till I started counting... so I did..just to see... gee looks like 4 dozen are still inside.. I can't imagine how many are upstairs already.. I'll give you that count a little later... when I get some clothes on..[ OK>> it's only 19 upstairs...see not so many ]...but you understand... many are quite small this time of year....and they fight for space with the rest of things..like the dozen plumeria.. [ woops..you got me thinking of real numbers now... it's 19 plumeria...by actual count. and probubally no more than 1/2 of them are over 6' tall ] and I haven't got a new plumeria for two years.. I've been going to plumeria annanomus meetings ..
I wish I knew where to draw the line.. or even what a line looks like .or why one might see a line...but I haven't started giving things away yet.. for the spring..and the dozen BIG brugs I gave to a friend to store in his greenhouse for the winter.. I might not ask for them back....like who really needs a 7' tall HG that makes golden flowers... I don't do yellow well..
I did start a new foam planter yesterday.. that's 12' long..X 18 " tall.... I'd found an unused bit of space on top of the skylight that I use to get up to the roof.. Ok..I'll stop embaressing myself.. what's the saying.. better not to say anything. and have them believe you might be a fool.. rather than opening your mouth..and erasing all doubt..
Gordon
OH..I have a new strategy for beddding and auxillary plant buying this spring...nothing that isn't flowering blue...that..surely cuts down the number of them I might buy..and it saves a great deal of time when I go into anursery...I can quickly scan the entire place...no blue and I'm off and running.. although..I'm sure to fall off that wagon also.. see I'm trying...... white and blue looks good together... pink and blue is cute also..purple and blue is compatable...see rationalization is sweet.. allowing and fun

Getting this thread back to it's original topic.
It looks as though this new seedling had set at least two pods. I have a Rosalie pod on her and a Fleming Island Jewel pod. There may be at least one Rothkirch pod as well but its still a little iffy on them. I will have to wait a week or two to see if they are really going to stay.

A Brug named Fleming Island Jewel sounds intriguing. Do you have a photo of her?
yes..Just the name FIJ sounds lovely... what color is the jewel..
Fleming Island Jewel is a single pink, showing heavy aurea influence with beautiful tendrils. It is a
Ludger Schneider cross made in Germany but the seed was grown out here in the states by John Scott. The cross is Klein Lady X Everlasting Ruby. It is also a pod sister to Fleming Island Rachel which is a double pink.
This is the year of the tendrils for me. I am looking to improve on some of the long tendriled varieties. That's why you will see many of the really nice long tendriled brugs used in my latest crosses.

I love the shape. I'm not too crazy about long necked Brugs. With what have you crossed this one?
I only had pollen that was a gift, The plant I have is still too small for blooms. I used the pollen on Sheer Bliss, Vixen, Klein Lady,Rosamond and the new Rubirosa(1) x Peanut cross. All of these have produced pods.
Maybe you can clarify something for me. I've read that Rubirosa is also known as Rubiline here in the states. Rubirosa appears in the Register of Brugmansia Cultivars, but Rubiline does not. At least not as an individual, but as a group. Now for the questions. Are Rubirosa and Rubiline the same? Does the designation Rubiline Group mean that there are several Ecuador Pink X Rothkirch offspring with the same name? Are they sufficiently different to be able to cross pollinate? I see you referred to the last cross pod parent as "new Rubirosa(1). Part of the Rubiline Group?
Too many questions.....LOL!!
Monika Gottschalk would be the best one to ask about this but the brief version is that "Rubiline" group consists of several pod sisters (some named like Rubirosa and Vulkenperl) and some not named (those grouped as Rubiline group) because they were too similar too each other. The cross that Monika used to produce the Rubiline group was Ecuador Pink x Rothkirch. Since they are pod sisters, of course they can be crossed together as any pod sisters can be. If you notice when I list a cross of Rublirosa that was made BEFORE the official Rubirosa was legally released I list it as Rubirosa(1). That is because the Rubirosa that appeared in the states early on may in fact not be the "real" Rubirosa but one of the pod sisters that looked almost identical making it a Rubiline. Until someone has two plants (one official Rubirosa and one of the Rubirosa(1)) that are old enough to attempt to be crossed together, we will still have a mystery on our hands as to whether or not Rubirosa and Rubirosa(1) are indeed one and the same brug.
Note for newbies: If Rubirosa crossed to Rubirosa(1) produces a pod then we can conclude that they are different brugs. If repeated pollination attempts of these two brugs produce no pods then tthe conclusion would be that they are the same brugmansia cultivar.

Thank you for the explanation, Gary.
