I blew it and forgot to get a pic of Core digging this out. It was adjacent to the now infamous Porta Potty. Watching him dig in such an odoriferous location was a hoot. Can't you imagine the fun he had driving home?
Cameron and Sydney were here too and they are cuter in person than their pictures.
You had to have seen this......
Oh what cute kids!Dad's not bad either.
I went strawberry picking with the grandkids this week too.
aaah I remember those strawberry picking days !!!!! The leaf after tv rode looks like a palm almost
LOL, love the photos. I don't feel so bad for driving down the road with bamboo sticking out the back of my car now. Beautiful banana, I can't wait for mine to get that large. I am so impatient with them taking so long to get established (and all the pups keep competing with the main stalks).
He gave up after a few, there are still others for the digging if you are interested. The Porta Potty is still here however and you have to be prepared for the odor. LOL
LOL, even if I could convince Natasha to drive that far (with gas prices as they are) - which is doubtful, we leave tomorrow. I'll just have to be patient. How long did your basjoo's take to get established Alice? I've got one that's been in the ground a full year now (got to about 4.5' last year) and I was able to save most of the pseudo stem. Put 13 more in the ground this year. You probably think we're nuts for that. I think I did the math that that'll be a few hundred bananas within a few years). Will have my own little grove, LOL.
Yes, a few hundred is about right. LOL Mine took a few years but they were planted in an area that received no irrigation - ever - except for the rain.
They did look cool next to the tiki hut; Corey, you and your neighbor will just have to come and get the rest. :-)))
The Tiki hut neighbor is plant disabled. First off they're from Ohio and really have no idea about anything tropical looking. I asked them if they wanted some EE's and the response was " those things they sell at the fair?" Apparently they call some sort of funnel cake an elephant ear in Ohio. LOL. Since I will be sitting at the tiki I decide to help them tropical it up.
All together I had 4 big ones and 3 small ones so we're set for bannas this year. If they all live we'll have many more in a year or two. I also gave him a dewarf canvendish too.
we have elephant ears at the sc state fair.... they're soooooo good
Am I the only one who doesn't know what those are?
If we're still talking about EE's at the fair:

I think they go by several names.
Never cared much for them myself. DW loves them though.
i guess so, core!
there is one place; a certain little stand that has the best ears. it doesn't have a name, it just says "elephant ears" on the top sides, and "a state fair food" on the top corners. if you get them from the big ol' Lordy's stand, they don't taste as good.....just my 2 cents in case any of yall were wondering
OMG, I can smell the grease from here. LOL
"it doesn't have a name, it just says "elephant ears" on the top sides, and "a state fair food" on the top corners."
Insider information!! Cool.......
That is another one of those "you had to have been there" things. LOL
For those Sandlappers who have not been to the State Fair you don't know what local culture you are missing.
Hey Trent, did you ever have to meet your mother at the rocket????????
no, lol! but whenever i go, we meet friends there. my dad always makes fun of it whenever they say that. do you know what they do with all those plants they have after the fair???
"Plant disabled" and elephant ears (edible ones). You guys are a hoot!
Core - I can't believe with all the travelling you have done you have never experienced an Elephant Ear...I like mine with whipped cream and strawberries on top (or cherries...might as well get all the calories at once)
DSB how was your trip to Columbia!
I went to the Cola farmers market last Thursday was pretty disappointed with the pricing...will have to go back again when I have more then two hours to spare before picking up the kiddos at school....
I sure wish some of ya'll were coming to the round up this weekend in Asheville - it would be nice to meet you in person (I was lucky to get to meet tggfsk and fleurs two wkends ago when we went to EL's gardens...)
Trent - what do they do with the plants after the Fair? were you asking or did you know....
i was asking... i have no clue!!!
My trip to Colombia was great! As usual, someone else doing the driving is what I like.12 people in a van.The driver and leader is a naturalist. We went on 378 which is more interesting than the interstate and takes about the same time.
The only problem was that it was Friday and the place was full of school kids on field trips. We didn't have enough time to really enjoy everything. The plantings at the zoo were very impressive and the botanical gardens well worth the trip.I would have liked another 2 hours.
We had lunch at the lizards Lair.Yum,yum, yum,I just love those sides.Never mind the meat.
I won't be able to attend the RU but will be going up to Charlotte to pick my son up at the airport on Monday and proceed up to the mountains.I will be there until the 20th.If anyone would like to come up just let me know.No computer up there.Dmail if you want the phone #.
Red I have seen an EE but I didn't know that's what they were called. Haven't been to a state fair in probably 20 years, the closest I've gotten to that is the Coastal Fair down in Savannah. I always get a corn dog or two while I'm there. LOL. Also I'm not much of a grazer, have to keep my girlish figure you know.
I hear you Core it's just so hard not to go to the Fair and smell all those delactibles and be hungry every 5 minutes...I did not go to the state fair last year because I had done so good dropping numerous pounds that I had put on two years ago that I would very much like to keep it that way...it's nice to be back down to single digit clothes again LOL
If they survived that trip on your car top they can live through anything. Maybe I should say if you and your family can survive a trip in a car topped with LARGE banana plants you guys can survive anything. :-))))
