Hi,
I've got a few new plants from last year that seem to be starting a bit later than the rest of my plants. I'm not sure if they are just naturally late starters, or if they aren't too happy with their growing conditions. Any advice would be appreciated.
First off is a patch of hardy amaryllis. They actually seemed to have spread a bit from last year, and have some good foliage, but no sign of flowers.
Secondly, my turk's cap and pigeonberry have a few tiny green shoots starting, but that is about it.
I also have a few plants that didn't flower at all. One is a spring bouquet viburnum, that put on a lot of growth but no flowers. The other one is a agarita, which had a few flowers but not fruit (last year it was completely covered in flowers and fruit).
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Dennis
Late starters?
My amaryllis just started blooming last week and I'm a lot warmer than you. My MIL lives just a few miles from me but her garden is in a more sheltered location and hers bloomed about a week earlier. I think all the cool weather(especially at night) has put a few things behind. I know my lantana is usually a lot further along than it is this year.My winter annuals like viola on the other hand have lasted a lot longer than usual..
Dennis,
My amaryllis has been blooming for almost two weeks. I'm about 2 hrs from College Station. I don't have the other two plants. My lantanta is just now putting out a few sprouts. I've noticed that some things like roses didn't go completely dormant. They lost a lot of leaves and stopped blooming for a very short time. Other things are sprouting late. When we first moved to the ranch, the live oak trees shed their leaves in late late January - early February. That was Jan - Feb 2002. This year, the trees were shedding their leaves at the same time the new ones were growing out in late March to early April.
My pigeonberry has just come back to life, putting out new leaves. I think it's the cool weather we've been having that's slowing everything down.
Dennis, both my St. Josephs Lily Amaryllis have buds coming up but another week or so until they bloom. Last year (their first) only one clump bloomed so you may not get blooms this year.
My Turks cap is still not showing any sign of life. I think it was late May by the time it showed up last year. I thought I'd lost it.
I think I have lost a few things - Hamelia Patens, Mountain Sage (S. regla), Red Bird of Paradise and Firespike. Even with the mild winter. And I did not even lose my Lion's ear. :/ I moved the S. regla really late last year and did a terrible job digging it up so that ones probably my fault.
Sweezel, don't give up on that Hamelia. Last yr my mom thought that she had lost the one I gave her the fall b4. I reminded her FtW had had 30's less than a month b4.
The ground is just not warm enough yet! Give them time! They will probably surprise you.
:~)
Well I have not pulled it up, yet. I will give it some more time and hopefully it will show some life.
sweezel, my Hamelia has little 3" shoots coming out of the root ball and I'm in zone8b, maybe zone 9a.
My hamelias are just now poking out. They've been later than everything else as long as I've had them.
I'm glad to hear that some of my plants may still have some hope. :)
I'll just be patient and see what happens...
Thanks!
Dennis
Thanks Gals. I looked at today and scratched the ground a little around it. Still no sign of life, but I will give it some time. I am glad to report that my Coral Vine has inch long shoots. I was hoping I had not lost it too. It was that last thing besides the Turks Cap to wake up last year.
