Green roof concept?

I was reading through another thread I was following and it is being "taken out" I think. I had a question and thought I should start a new thread with it. What is the green roof concept? Is it actually stuff growing on the roof or does it mean something else. I saw a landscaping show on HGTV where they were growing grass and flowers on the tool shed roof. Is that the green roof concept?
