Need Advice: Buddy got into a porcupine

Penfield, PA(Zone 5b)

Buddy got into a porcupine (again) yesterday. My dad and my husband pulled probably 25 quills from his lower lip and 1 from the roof of his mouth. After about an hour of trying to get all the quills, we decided to let Bud calm down awhile before trying to get the last 3 quills out. When I came home from work today (early), there was only 1 left in his lip. My husband just got it out about an hour ago. Is it okay to just pull them out ourself or is it necessary to take him to the vet. The last time that I took Boomer to the vet with quills, I was in the car on the way home from the vet, when I noticed that Boomer still had a quill sticking out of his mouth. I immediately turned around and went back to the vet. They pulled it out, but said that it would have fallen out by itself. Does anyone else pull out the quills instead of going to the vet?
