Well, I'm now the proud new owner of 3 beautiful new brugs. They appear to be well rooted and ready to go in dirt. I know I've read this before, but the person I bought them from suggests cutting all the leaves off and take off some of the top, but I'm afraid to do it!
So, just how much and where should I cut?? Two have obviously been cut back before.
I've attached a picture of all three
New plants, cut back how much?????
If they are well rooted, don't do anything but pot them up. The cutting back is only for un rooted cuttings. those will take off for you in no time. Get potting.

edited to say you may have a little wilt from disturbing the roots but they will bounce back... I planted 2 of my brugs in the ground a few days ago and they never noticed the move.. they look great.. wish I could say the same for the rose bush I planted the same day.

Thank you so much Tammie! I'm so excited!
They'll have to winter in my basement, I sure can't put them in the ground here, but I don't know how I'll move them once they start to get really big!!!
Do they prefer direct sun (after establishing them a bit more)?
Mary ev, I have mine in pots, it would be easier for you to bring them indoors to the basement in the fall. I am in NY, mine goes dormant, and believe it or not, without light, it wakes up in the Spring. How weird is that? is like the brugs is telling us, please get us out in the light, we are ready to start growing to give you lots of blooms! Clemen
Plants know... I don't know how, but they do.
That is great, Clemen, and just what I hoped!
So, do you water them while they're dormant? (Putting them in the basement in the winter is what I'm planning, too.
MAryEv, yes i do every two weeks or so. Clemen
Thank you so much for your help!!!
Clemen-
That brug is a beauty!!!
MaryEv-
Ditto on what Tammie said. I have to overwinter my brugs in the basement, too. I keep most of my tropicals (Banana, EE's, Cannas, Brugs...etc) planted in pots and use a hand-truck to transport them, back and forth, from the garden to the house and vice versa. What varieties are your brugs? Last year was my first year growing brugs, 2 "Monster White" brugs and 1 white NOID. This year I am looking forward to adding color to my existing whites: pink, yellow, apricot, and I am so hooked...and also impatient, LOL!!!
Happy gardening-
Jan
I second that inpatience! I look at my brugs every day for new leaves.. I have 3 blooms forming on one.. one is just starting to open at the bottom of the blom 'pod'.. it won't be long now.

How exciting Tammie, I placed my over wintered brug outside last week, it has just started to get leaves, it will be a while to see a bloom. Enjoy yours! Clemen
My three are Coral Insignis, Georgia Peach and Mariner's Pride.
I potted them up and put them outside, but we've had frost for the last two nights, so they had to come back in. Unfortunately, they had one night of light frost before I realized how cold it was. I think they're okay, but I'm a little worried.
Also, after I unwrapped them, they were not as well rooted as I thought and now that they're potted up, they are a little droopy. Still, I think I'll leave them alone and see how they did with the cold temps. I also think I'll keep them inside for a few more days. Our danger of frost is past, for now, but I think they need more time to aclimate to being back in dirt.
If they got damaged by the frost .. you would know.. all the leaves would be mush.. ask me how I know! don't worry.. if they have some roots, they will eventually take off, even if they lose the leaves they have.. new ones will start.. Just give them all the sun you can and they will do OK. Sun is the key. Don't over water but don't let them completely dry out either...
