moss basket

Plano, TX

i bought a moss type basket--not green moss but like a dry lining in a metal open basket--do i just plant whatever i want in it? do i use special soil? what is the advantage of using these? it was on clearance last year and i just found it in the garage

Is it a coconut husk mat in there or like dried moss? If it's dried out moss then you probably have to wet it down pretty good before you plant to keep the dirty contained. I'd just use a soilless potting mix, but maybe some of the experts on here have been advice on that. The advantage? Well they are pretty, great drainage (obviously), and you can poke little holes through the cocomat or moss and actually plant out the side for a fuller look if you want. Just make sure you water it A LOT and you probably want to consider adding some of the water retention crystals (it's too early I can't remember what those things are called) to your soil mix when you plant to help with that.

Even the coconut mat should be thoroughly drenched before potting in it. They are so much prettier to look at than the plastic ones although I have some of them too.

thanks--but the water drains out if you water too much right? so you must hang it outdoors?

I've found these are best lined with plastic. Punch some drainage holes in the plastic and plant what you want.

Otherwise, the best way to rehydrate one of these is to plunge the full container in water and let it absorb.

Yes, the water will run right thru and out. It would be messy indoors.

ok-i think i get it now--thanks again

I planted this one without a plastic liner because I wanted "this" to happen.

This is a smaller sansevieria that puts on sucker plants. It doesn't require a lot of moisture either so works all right in this type of planter and I like the way it looks.

What kind of plants were you wanting to plant in the basket?

oh that should be pretty--i do not know what kind of flowers i want to plant in it--suggestions?

I'm not much good at selection of flowers. I would pick something that spills downward and maybe mix it with a couple more upright plants... One could even be a houseplant for greenery.

Are you going to use it inside or out? If you chose not to line it with plastic, you could use a succulent like a sedum? As I said, I am not much good at suggestions.... lol

think i will use it outdoors -at least till winter--like the spilling down idea
