Crinums?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have acquired a crinum lily and need to know where to plant it. Will it survive in my full sun bed?

The plant probably will, but the flowers will last longer if they get afternoon shade. BTW plant it where it has lots of room to spread. They are buggers to dig up. I have seen some around here planted in yards. They don't seem to appreciate being dug up so if you plant it in the yard it doesn't threaten any other plants.

Afternoon shade...hmmmm...that's a tricky thing in my yard! LOL Thanks for the answer, though! I know they don't like to be moved and they spread, so I might have to consider a different spot.

Stephanie - I move mine all the time with no problem except they dont like to bloom the year you move them. Dig them up and let them have some fun - I always had mine in full sun, the blooms might last longer in the shade but full sun is fine - just be careful they get to be BIG plants.

Thanks Mitch! When you say big, how big are we talking?

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

The mama plant I got mine from 6 years back was 4 plus feet tall and about the same wide they keep growing and growing and growing.

Okie dokie! That's one huge plant!! I might have to reconsider planting it in the 2 places I was considering. Thanks for the info!

No problem - they will live there for a long time so find them a spot and let them love it - they will reward you for years and years to come.

Yikes! Mitch the 5 you gave to me are close together and right outside my window. They will eat the house and deck.

In time - dont worry that will give that area a great tropical look, the ones that big had to be at least 10 years old.. the lasdy could not remember for sure but Ms Pearl thought she planted them in the early 90s.

I think Cj had some that get to be 6 feet tall. Maybe it wasn't Cj, but somebody on the trade thread was offering them. But I think they're not hardy in 8a. The flowers on mine go up to about 4 feet. Do you know what kind you have? Some are not that big.

I know in the co-op we just had they offered some the reached 6 feet... I had no idea they got that big! But was told yes they sure can.

I have the old pure white one, a mauve no name, and Milk and Honey. The old white one was from Ms Pearl in Waxahachie, I rented a room from her back in my college days.

I have something called "Passalong Pink". Of course, I'll probably have to wait until next year to see it bloom, but that's okay.

How do they do in shade/dappled shade?

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

yep, 4-6 foot tall flower stalks definitely likely, and as wide. Huge, tropical-looking long leaves. Dunno if moist soil is 'required' but definitely tolerates it in my yard. Seem to do OK with only 4 hours or so of direct sunlight too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Do you think they'd do okay with less than 4 hours of direct sunlight but lots of filtered light or dappled shade?

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, they would grow just fine, but might bloom less.

Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah, I have no comparison to amount/vigor of blooming. So , likely mine are just 'getting by'.

Is there a way to 'raise the crown' or thin out any trees to increase the light?
