I'm not sure what to do with him. Apparently it was in a nest , but we don't know for sure. if we would have left him , he would have been killed by some animal

Hi Kathy, Heres a site to see if you have a wildlife rehabilitator in or near your area.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

So you don't know what it is?

I was hoping to get an id.

thanks for the link, there is someone here duckmother who rehabilitates these birds. she lives in Little rock. close to me.

I'll have to send her a dmail

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

No rehabilitator in our area, don't know if duckmother takes in these things. Haven't a clue to what it is, we will try to let it go tomorrow and see if it will fly off.

I hope someone can ID it for us though.

It's the cutest thing with the neatest looking feet. black ring around it's beak we though t some sort of duck, or loon, or something like that. but just not sure.

thanks for the help pelletroy

That's an adult Pied-billed Grebe. It didn't fall from a tree....makes a small, floating nest....eats invertebrates and small fish.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

DH sat there and watched it fall from the tree. It was stunned from the fallto the ground. I'm so glad it's an adult, we'll let it go in themorning.

and JUST SO we all know, MY Darling daughter guessed the same exact bird. I'm so impressed LOL

we have a bird book,

What do yu mean, it makes a small floating nest? why was it up in the tree? we were standing right next to the tree when it fell. and plop on the ground it fell LOL

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

I geuss it could have been flying and just dived down or something right in front of us.

I've never seen one of these, this is so neat. He's aweful little for an adult, but glad it is an adult, I'll feel better about letting him go now LOL

so you thinkit's a male or female?

neat site about this bird, we have 2 ponds close to us. but a good l/2 mile from each one of them, weird to see this thing flying around for a bird that doesn't like to fly

I do appreciate the help so much

Merritt Island, FL(Zone 10a)

Maybe it hit a tree while flying(?). This bird breeds in your area so a night-migration flight seems unlikely. Nest is built on floating or edge vegetation...the legs on these birds are so far back on the body that they can't walk. They sorta push along on their bellys. Pied-billed Grebe is not a very graceful flyer so nesting in trees would be difficult. Male and female birds look alike...the ring around the bill indicates that it's a breeding bird...probably will be fine in the AM...you might want to release it into the water.

Sorry Kathy I was on my way to bed and just wanted to give the site to you. I didn't know what type it was without looking through the book.

Yep, Pied-billed Grebe. It probably hit the tree accidentally while on migration. Take it to the nearest decent-sized lake, and release it there.

Ok, that's what we'll do, cause we just tried to release it adn it wouldn't fly, and could run but not well. There are plenty of lakes around here. I'm glad it's older, cause it sure looked like it was a young bird, it's really small.

thanks for all the help

we'll release it today

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

If you can, release somewhere the water is reasonably deep - its first action will be to want to dive (that's how they search for food). A boat launching ramp would be ideal.

I'm trying to talk my Dh into taking me to this wild life reserve about 25 min from here, we're not sure it's open because it's so flooded this time of year, but if we can get close enough to the water. we could release it anywhere down there.
